  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role involves going to new places in the net work everyday, whether it is going to cabs or customer premises and either making a new telephone line or repairing it. This is a problem solving job as every job is never the same an takes a lot of thinking and understanding.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I learned many new skills from understanding out HHT (hand held tester) which gives us different reading of faults and kinks in the network. To health and safety, how often we check our equipment also how to use it the correct and proper way. They even showed us correct way to drive in Bt way, more slower then usual road laws but we have gear carrying on the van.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy this apprenticeship very much as I have learnt many skills and have been moved around country to learn them. Pole climbing took longest was but scary at first but again the excitement was their and felt over whelming and I love waking up knowing my van is my office.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The program for studying is bit slow I won’t lie, we go to the apprenticeship course for study day but it’s more copying what we have learnt down on a pc. Then every one is sitting in silence most he time like we are in a library so that’s little off putting.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Not so much no, had an incident where I went up ladder on a bungalow and my coach screaming at me for not having a helmet instead of reminding me in first few months before I climbed it. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] Then I got first and final warning which was extreme.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • For our training provider as in nvq classes very little like I said we sit in class road chat quietly with each other but not real communication and when we send work back if it’s not right he doesn’t really explain very well what needs to be changed.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • We learn better on the job most of us agree the nvq is basically a no value qualification. Can’t use it anywhere else, most of it is waist of time as we learn on the job and writing to what a learner wants isn’t necessarily what goes on in the job.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Not that I have heard of, most time we wake up sign on way to early drive an hour of our time in morning and at end of the day do the same give an hour back basically a 10 hour day. So most don’t really want to give more of our time to the company.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It’s like a self employed role but always paid. Covered for sick and holiday. But long hours and management are pretty bad. Health and safety over the top feels like every one wants to get rid of you moment you start however ignoring that as rarely see them. Your by your self problem solving which I love and meeting new people every day.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Be calm, don’t rush anything, if forget just go slow as if you make mistakes coaches are not your friend are more manager spies to try get rid of you as horrible as that sounds. Careful of residence houses if feel odd or unsafe don’t work their. Make plenty of notes of all your jobs.
