  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • We have a morning meeting each day to set out what we are planning on achieving for the day. After that we get straight in doing real jobs and learning how to preform each task correctly. Often we get the freedom to practice our skills on our own to see if the knowledge has sunk in.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many skills during the apprenticeship so far. These include my communication skills (Verbal, Written and Drawing); have picked up many new skills as an engineer including how to select the correct tools for the job and how to operate machines such as the Centre lathe and Vertical mills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed the programme so far. I has plenty surpassed my expectations as an apprenticeship. The thing I enjoy the most about the apprenticeship is the freedom I have to do real jobs independently while having the knowledge that there are always people around to help you. The work we are given varies in content almost every day so I am always doing something new.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme I am on is very well organised and structured. At the beginning of the course we were given a 'roadmap' of what we will be doing through the four years. This includes which areas we will be working in and when. While we are in each area we are also told about what internal training we need to complete from the beginning so our course plans are transparent and clear.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • From Martin Baker we get lots of support, we are given a mentor for each area we work in who is responsible for giving us the basic training we need to get started and ensuring that we feel competent to do the jobs given to us. There are also several training sessions given to us where we learn more specialised skills and get to understand how the company works as a whole.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Our training provider gives us lessons all through the four years teaching us about the engineering industry as a whole. They also provide external training and assessment to help train us in areas which our company may not always do. the assessments as well as being part of our coursework help refine the skills we are learning both in the workplace and in the lessons.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that the qualification I get from the training provider (Mechanical Engineer) helps me in the workplace as the skills I am learning with the qualification are very relevant to the type of work I am doing in the workplace. I also get the benefit of being able to make notes from the lectures the trainers give which I can reference back to at work if I am ever unsure on something.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many extra curricular activities which I can get involved with. We go to apprenticeship shows where we can talk about the apprenticeship to students, air shows where we represent the company to potential customers and answer any questions they may have and watch pilots sit in our seats and there are social evenings where many employees and apprentices go out to dinner and relax together.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Martin-Baker to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend martin Baker to a friend because it is an apprenticeship which cares about its apprentices. The amount of things we get to do is phenomenal and the quality of the training we get is unmatched. It manages to do all this while still being a fun and comfortable environment where you can be yourself and explore your own talents.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Martin-Baker?
  • If you chose to apply to martin baker for an apprenticeship I would recommend trying to do some sort of engineering outside of your studies (even if its fixing your bike) as any extra experience goes a long way. I would also advise you co be confident in yourself as someone who is sure of themselves always stands out from the crowd.
