  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work within the quantity surveying area of the business. I generally work on excel day to day and go to my college one day a week. I work on the largest infrastructure in Europe. I also am a mentor for other apprentices. I work with the client on a regular basis.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my excel and report writing skills since starting at arup. I have also have developed my commiseration in stakeholder engagement and how to treat the different stakeholders. I have learnt how to adapt my behavior to different types of people, also time management skills i have added to my skill set.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my course. I am currently doing a Construction Management HND on the surveying pathway. I have been given lots of responsibility when working on different projects such as working on site, working on big projects. and working on HS2. I have enjoyed working on different project at arup

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The program I thought was well planned from the start but the time at Solihull college has been fluctuating between good and bad. Lack of teaching experience from the teachers shows. The assignments are courses are interesting but just requires an improvement. But my overall the course can be very good

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Arup provide lots of support, every apprentice has a buddy to start with that has experience, then assigned a mentor. Support from other areas such as workplace options are promoted heavily and work very well. I would recommend anyone who is struggling to speak to someone in the workplace if needed.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have a bi-weekly wreaking with my mentor and have regular catch ups with him. He works closely to me and can always give me advice if I went to him. I know other apprentices within the company have the same opinion as me about there mentors. Very good support

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The college course gives me information and knowledge that helps me understand terminology and phrases that people use in meetings. The teachers have worked in industry and it means we can relate as a class to theournroles outside of college. College provides scenarios on all the assignments that we have to work on

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are lots of different work events, socials and sports events. We have a football team that play every Thursday. There is a gym within the office, there is also hockey, badminton lots of different sports and activities easily available to all the people that work at arup. It’s great

  • 9a. Would you recommend Arup to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • They are a great company to work for, they provide great support for studies and furthering your education. Arup also have great benefits with bonus’ every six month in profit share etc. Arup also provide good training courses to help you further your career. Arup is a great place to work.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Arup?
  • Be yourself. Arup look for good people as well as the best. If you portray yourself as honestly as you can that is one part of the criteria already ticked. As an apprentice I had no relevant experience or knowledge in industry if you do your research and find out what they do. This is play to your advantage
