  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Working within a large team estimating for all types of projects from buildings to infrastructure. Measuring from drawings and collating rates ready for pre tender estimates to be sent to the client. Working with engineers and designers to discuss assumptions and options regarding the drawings and/or options ready for costing.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a lot of new skills on Microsoft Office using PowerPoint, Excel, Word and Emails on a daily basis. Using in house training courses to use the programmes to the company's standard. I have developed skills such as communication and networking within the office through interaction with each different cohort. I have learnt off other members of the team to enable me to be self sufficient on projects.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy the programme in my workplace. I am treated fairly and the same as other members of staff with the same opportunities given. The team are close and make the office environment positive and a good place to work. The course meets my expectations as I am given time to study and also time to grow and learn on projects.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My induction was a smooth process with training given where required. I was then put straight onto projects which is all valuable experience to learn on the job. I was given a mentor who taught me all aspects about the company and my role, I had regular meetings face to face with my mentor and line manager to measure my development.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My manager continues to support my development and allows me to take time to study to ensure I can complete my studies to the best I can. My manager and mentor constantly seek jobs that are suitable for my competence where I can complete the task without feeling unsure or under pressure. Reviews are held regularly to ensure my workload supports my learning and development.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I am given 1 day a week out of the office to complete my studies. My mentor and other team members show an interest in my course and support me where applicable. I can approach my line manager or mentor when ever I need support within my studies or in the office.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My course teaches me the basics of my role and how to used the skills required for my role in the workplace. My manager and mentor place me on projects suited to my modules at University so I can use my learning more. I know what is expected of me on projects and how to use my studies at work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many social events that take place weekly and monthly within the company. They can be in the office or external events. There are plenty of clubs to join and volunteer with local communities or social events. There are sports teams to compete against other offices in the UK too.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Arup?
  • To be yourself in the interview and explain why Arup appeals to you, use the assessment days to show off who you really are and why Arup will want you. To take time on the onboarding process and make relationships to each member of staff that you talk to and to take every opportunity given to you as it can help further your career.
