  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is focused on the aspects of programme management, in my first role I was based in the Programme Management Office (PMO) for the area of Wholesale & Ventures in BT but most recently I have been involved with the 5G programme. a programme management role involves a lot of work relating to ensuring good governance in the projects in the programme as well as working with the various stakeholders to ensure the overall programme stayed on track. This was done through looking at the big picture of the programme as well as working on a project level. I do a lot of reporting, training and governance meetings for project assurance.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My business skills have certainly developed, in terms of stakeholder management as well as planning and executing various project actions. I am able to better develop and sustain interpersonal connections between team members and my senior managers. Also I am now able to view the project and its environment more pragmatically and with a more business orientated point of view than I was able to before allowing me to make better decisions when it comes to project management.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I find it a very good programme in terms of the opportunities I have been afforded in the business especially in my programme role as I was able to have a view of all the interesting projects that were taking place and I was able to get involved in them. Also within BT there are several extra programmes or opportunities such as volunteering or extra perks from the business, which are beneficial to me and help to enjoy the programme.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Since I am one of the first to go through the project management apprenticeship there is not as solid of a foundation than other programmes so some of the features were not solidified or worked out fully. It has been subject to changes at times, despite this once it has ben more established the programme has become more consistent and reliable in its structure.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • BT is a very supportive employer as they provide many different avenues of support to the apprentices, for example there are regular calls with senior managers and apprentice support staff in HR to discuss how we are progressing. There are also various other areas of support such as free counselling or anonymous help lines as well as various members of HR staff who can help.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider QA have at times been awkward in communication and helping however on the whole they are able to be relied upon when support is needed. My most recent skills coach is very helpful in answering queries and supporting my learning with regular meetings. When I am in college the training providers have been very effective and supportive by helping pass my qualification.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification has helped me greatly to lay a foundation of my knowledge of project management and the business environment. This qualification is also a great starting point for further qualifications, which will help to gain better knowledge and more training to further my skills in my role at BT. It is a widely recognised qualification that will ensure that I will have good opportunities elsewhere if needed.
