  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in the Technical Services and Operations sector for BT. Also knows as TSO. My current role involves planning and delivery management of hydra cables upon customer requests. This involves building the jobs onto the system, making the live connections on the system for the exchanges, ordering stores, requesting field engineers to site to complete the circuit. This is then handed back to the customer for them to use.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I've learnt a whole range of skills even down to the basics of using Microsoft excel and email. Customer communications and being organised is a must in this role. Failing to do so will only make it harder on yourself in the long run. I am continuously learning new skills with ever new programme we come across for the role.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The most enjoyable part is the freedom and responsibility. As we progress through our learning we are able to complete certain tasks/roles on our own which then leads to problem solving and within time boosts your confidence in the role. We are always learning and adapting to the surroundings/programmes.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure of the programme is very thorough. We all have a job role to do along side attending college (usually this is 6 weeks worth of the course at a training centre) and for the remaining 3 years we are working our way through to complete out NVQ work. After all this is completed we will then become full employees for BT.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support we receive from BT is outstanding. There is always help offered, with this being in your working life or even personal life. We can attend volunteering days if we wish, as well and work experience days which could also help with networking around the company should you wish to try others roles within TSO.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The 6 week of college is split down in to 1 week blocks. This is to be completed within your first year of the apprenticeship. This is broken down which allows us to study as required. During the NVQ we meet with the apprentice coach around once every 4/6 weeks in case there is anything you need help/advise with and they are always contactable via email too. We also receive dedicated study days to help with the NVQ which we take 1 every 2 weeks.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Before starting I had a very vague idea of what role were available within BT. Since joining its like a whole new BT experience has been opened. There are so many roles. This in fact had me learning everything from scratch on arrival. The training really helped ease us into our roles and boost our confidence and understanding.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are various activities to get involves with. We are allocated volunteering days throughout the year, alongside sports activities that are organised and trips that we can take. There are also invites to events that could improve and help with your networking skills. You can also arrange activities/charity events yourself.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • There are so many opportunities and gateways that BT offer. If you didn't want to stay in a job role for more than 2 years or so that's the great thing about BT. You can move around in the company to explore other avenues that may take your interest and to prevent your day to day becoming monotonous.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Be patient. It will not happen overnight. The interview process can be a little long however it is worth the wait. If you are unsure of anything in the interview process you can always ask the helpers that are on hand. Just be yourself and be honest, that's the best you can do.
