  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Interacting with business customers and the products which BT can offer them, whilst also creating spreadsheets to help portray information to the customers or members within BT. I have recently moved into this role as part of a rotation, where beforehand I was focusing on internal pricing and carrying out processes involving contracts and deals within the Voice Products team.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a lot of skills and developed on some of my existing ones thanks to the Academy, which is an online portal giving employees access to videos and articles on improving and developing skills which will be useful in the workplace. Skills are also developed through on the skill training, where I have further developed my software knowledge for applications such as Word and Excel.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Working in the office and attending University has been great fun, and the programme is fairly well organised meaning that there are generally no issues that reduce my enjoyment of the programme. And any time there was an issue which would impact my overall enjoyment of the programme, the issues were swiftly dealt with.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is fairly organised, although at the beginning it wasn't too well organised. This was mainly because the role I joined in was not well-defined, and my manager was fairly new at the time. Since then, my manager has moved on to a different part of the business, where I got a new manager and a new role, and after a few months it has settled and everything is running smoothly.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Continuous support is available at work. This can be work related support from either my manager or team members, but also support for the programme as a whole from HR - along with any other issues than don't directly involve the role - and IT support through the online website FixIT (which is run by BT members and offers prompt help with technical issues).

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • While the University has not offered as much support so far as BT have, they still do provide a decent amount. They typically offer support through emails, where they can be accessed at any time with issues or queries. Also, the University provides an online Portal, which is used by the lecturers to update the class as a whole and offer support.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The role that I am currently in has so far not represented any aspect of the course that I am studying at University. However, the course at University has allowed me to have a better understanding of some of the products that BT offer, and the processes involved with them, which has allowed me to feel more comfortable talking about the products.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Events pop-up from time to time, but the majority of the social events are generally organised within teams, which don't happen too regularly due to the busy schedule of most of the members of the team. To my knowledge, there are no sports teams that I could directly join, and if there is there isn't much promotion of these extra-curricular activities.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The level of training and support you receive as being a member of BT is outstanding. When you're working at BT, everyday you are learning new things and developing yourself. The high amount of experienced members that you can learn from further contributes to the level of training and development you gain form working at BT, Also, the many opportunities offered within BT makes sure that you're always able to do something that interests you.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • If you're lucky enough to get to the Assessment Centre, make sure to be yourself, because BT are always looking at how good of a person you are - as well as your abilities. It's just as important to present yourself well as it is to contribute effectively. Also, when you start, make sure to make a lot of connections; be that with other Apprentices, or colleagues on your floor, as I can guarantee these will play a vital role in the future of your career.
