  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • A day at BT is never the same. I spend the majority of my day in my team (which changes every 6 months as we rotate around TV.) Within each team I am taught how different roles work. I also spend my time volunteering at events such as career fairs, charity events, etc.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My communication skills have developed a great deal. At BT, you are expected to communicate with your colleagues as well as other internal/external members of staff. This can be done via Skype call, email, face to face, etc. This has built up my confidence significantly. This in turn will help me in various ways in the business.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy it, it isn't like anything else I have ever done. Everyone at BT is really friendly, this includes my own teams I work within and other teams I communicate with. I feel my expectations have been met, as prior to joining I had the assumption that BT was going to be a great place to work due to their longevity in the telecommunications field.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There is a good structure to my programme. I know that within my role I will alternate teams every sixth months to see a different area of the business. My university dates are also outlined far ahead in advance so I am aware when I will be out of the office.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Everyone at BT is really supportive, from older apprentices to my line manager. I know that if I needed to seek help from another member of staff I would feel confident in doing so. The HR department were fantastic during my induction week and gave me the correct contacts had I ever needed support.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I am relatively new to my course and haven't been attending university long. However, the tutors gave their email addresses to us at the start and are always very quick to respond to any queries. Their general attitude is that of a positive one and are always informing us of the success stories of previous apprentices. This makes me feel well supported.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • For the most part, everything I have learnt at university has significantly helped me in my role on a day-to-day basis. I am yet to properly apply my theoretical knowledge into proper practise as I am relatively new. However, it has given me a greater understanding of how my colleagues go about their tasks and has developed a further understanding for myself.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Social events are brilliant at my place of work, and it has given me a great chance to get to know the other apprentices. This started straight away, as management had arranged for us to meet for a meal prior to starting. This happens every few weeks, however we do not feel pressured into attending. We are always able to volunteer, and BT really encourage this. I have done work for Breast Cancer Care since starting at BT and this meant a great deal.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • BT allow for career progression, a good salary and are a supportive place to work. They understand the work/life balance, and will do all they can to accommodate this. Hard work is also recognised and does not get overlooked (I have experienced this at other companies.) Everyone is kind and friendly, it doesn't often feel like you're going to work!

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Try not to stress too much! Be yourself at the interviews, try not to be too shy, but at the same time, don't talk too much that you are coming across as overly confident and talking over others! Be smart, professional, and show a willingness to learn and succeed in the industry.
