  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day to day basis I am working under the harmonised Ethernet planning team however I am given the change to rotate onto other teams too. I complete an NVQ alongside my foundation degree at ravensbourne uni. Within my job roles I work on making minor changes to the infrastructure under the 21 core network from planning and ceasing orders to building and tracking faults.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed skills within Excel and Powerpoint and can also work on company specific software. My typing and general IT skills have improved a lot and I am also more confident speaking publicly both at uni and in meetings and or on conference calls. I have developed my writing skills when having to write formal emails and also am better with my time and punctuation. I am a better planner and much more organised now.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the friends I have made and working in London in a fast moving environment. This working space has offered me many opportunities and introduces me to people I would otherwise not have the opportunity to meet. I also enjoy the fact that I can sit courses such as lean practioner and CCNA which usually are expensive but BT will cover this cost for my learning. I enjoy completing multiple projects at once which is currently my office rotations, uni and NVQ.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My program started out very structured however when I got a new inexperienced manager I am now pretty much running the apprenticeship for myself. If i want to rotate teams or have oppurtunities then I arrange it for myself. My NVQ work is well structured and is all run on an online system so it is easy to track. My uni course also has an online system which makes it easier to track what work is due and to access all study materials.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I do not receive any support from my manager nor my NVQ coach despite writing several email complaints to address concerns I have. I do however get a lot of support from my mentor who is from a different Line Of Business who reached out to me. This is not however part of the apprenticeship.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I recieve a lot of support from UNi and I am able to call or email [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] my lead of year anytime I need for help and he always replies very fast. I am confident with all the work I submit and if I have any issues I know he will help sort it for me. My NVQ has been a nightmare and has changed several times since I started doing the work so I have been completing work that is not even in the unit however not made aware of this until I had already wasted all the time doing it.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification sadly is not the one I was told I would be getting. I was put on the wrong uni course. Despite this I do however believe I am learning a lot from the course its just not one that necessarily links to my job role or helps me in my job role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are loads of social events and activities I can get involved with. Since being on the scheme I have entered into several charity events and even been on tv bbc channel and in a few photoshoots for red nose day. I have also set up my own charity events which BT help me run and organize

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Despite its faults, BT is good income, good exposure, good qualifications and amazing friends. It has been fun completing my work alongside friends and through ups and downs. I have learnt a lot and feel much more confident in the working world. I would be happy to stay at BT for the rest of my career.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Make sure you get your application in early and that you properly prepare for the assessment days as someone can be accepted or discarded as easily as saying yes or no without a second thought ( I would know, I've sat in on assessment days) Appearance and attitude is very important and no matter what do not be late!!
