  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day to day basis my job involves the provision and repair of phone lines for people and businesses. It involves on site risk assessments weather working outside or in a customers safty always comes first. I also work at height and will eventually becomes skilled in the underground network

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Upon employment I had previous experience In The telecoms trade. Since then I have not only been able to improve my skills through good training I have been able to develop my over all knowledge of the network, what it does and how it does it as well as how to use new tools and testers.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Loving this job helps me enjoy what I do and openreach make sure there is the support and help available when required. I enjoy the freedom of lone working and have the opportunity to work with and help other engineers. I also like the amount of holidays I am entitled to

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The organisation like few others is structured well. There have been so far no days where I have not known what am doing that day. Any issues that have arisen while working have been dealt with in a professional way with support and confidentiality. Any items needed are Avalon’s across the country that day.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There are many different channels for support weather it’s on the job or at home you can get help with it all. I have never worked for a employer that offers as much support as openreach and I feel comfortable discussing with the relevant person. Openreach make a comfortable team that help each other

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider gives me as much support as I need when working towards my qualification. He supports me in a way that I feel works for me and coffee with biscuits are always a avalibe to make me comfortable. It overall an enjoyable qualification to work towards with the support needed to gain it

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It gives me a lot more understanding of the business and the channels available for the support I need. It also give me more knowledge and help refresh on the parts of the job I don’t do as often. Plus one of the perks is a pay rise when completed.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are not as many activities available so far but there are some and i don’t feel pressured to get involved with if I don’t want to. However these are great days to be involved with as you get to meet more of the people you work with always expanding you network of support

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Overall it’s a great place to work and the perks are fantastic. The days are enjoyable and you get to meet lot of different people. The pay is not bad and there is a lot of opportunity to increase that with overtime. There can be a lot of pressure sometimes but I enjoy it.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Want to do this job safely want to be in a face to face role with customers want to be a proud openreach engineer with 110 percent effort want to be that person that always looking to be the best they can be at what they love once you crack it you’ll love it
