  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt how to work in a multidisciplinary design team to engage with other designers from other disciplines such as mechanical, civil and process engineers and work together to solve problems. I have been developing my knowledge of the design process and working on the different stages of design.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme a lot, the choice to do a degree apprenticeship instead of university was a no brainer. The experience I am gaining is extremely valuable, there are a lot of development opportunities & the bonus of being paid a salary, doing a degree part time & having no university fees all outweigh any benefit I can see from being at university full time.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well structured, it is a 5 year degree apprenticeship, the first 3 years are completing foundation degree (HNC & HND) and then the last 2 years are completing a part time bachelors degree BEng in electrical and electronic engineering. The structure for being in work & gaining experience is good as I do yearly placements on different projects to give me a wide range of experience. There are a lot of courses & opportunities to develop which need to be completed by the end of the apprenticeship.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • A lot of support, I am given challenging work to push myself further and develop my skills and behavioural competencies. This work is given to me by line managers who have been supportive by looking at what work I haven't had experience with yet so I get a wide range of knowledge and a full development.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The support from my training provider is good, they are easy to speak to & solve any problems we come across to make the course as smooth as possible. The deadlines for assignments are always fair & we have small classes which mean the learning and teaching feels better as more questions can be asked.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualifications I am receiving from my training provider will definitely help me perform better in my role at work, I am studying electrical & electronic engineering HND but will be completing my bachelors degree in the next 2 years. This will allow me to progress further in work as I will have a better knowledge & be able to work more independently.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yeah there are a lot of community nights out, so for each of the engineering disciplines (mechanical, electrical, civil) there are community nights out for everyone in the disciplines to get to know each other better. There are also more frequent day & nights out with project teams and they are organised every couple of months Apprentices & Graduates organise social activities & there are stem events where I can get to know other people who work for the company.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Sellafield Ltd to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Sellafield Ltd is a friendly place to work, the pay is good & there are lots of training & development opportunities to expand knowledge & move further in a career. The site is the most complex site with different challenges that cause engineers to develop their problem solving and be exposed to difficult challenges.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Sellafield Ltd?
  • Understand what engineering really is, understand how an engineering project goes from concept design where designs are being thought out, to detailed where the main concept has already been decided, but all the detailed information such as drawings, documents and calculations are being carried out. Get experience in an engineering project, it doesn't have to be a big 6 month project, its more about understanding how an engineering project goes from the start to finish & all the steps in between. Having this knowledge and being able to display it during assessment & interview will show a good understanding.
