  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Installing and fixing internet and telephone lines. It involves testing and installing lines. This could include climbing poles/houses, working in cabinets, working in underground joints. You deal with customers on a daily basis while working. The skills for this role were all new to me upon joining but were taught during training

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a complete new skill set with this job. Roadworks guarding, dealing with customers, working on a copper network, working in a telephone exchange, working underground in joints on both copper and aluminium cables, jointing, testing, the difference between sync and actual speeds, how to use a variety of tools.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Training was a lot of fun. Staying in hotels where everything is paid for. Travelling to parts of the uk I had never seen. The training courses are broken into groups of 8 people who you make friends with. Dealing with different trainers that are there to help throughout the hole experience.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme at times does not make sense. You are given a lot of information very quickly and have to figure out a lot of it along the way. At times a lot of the programme did not make sense to our roles or was outdated. At the end of the day work overtook the actual training section as we had training cancelled due to workstacks

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • You get all the support you need, I found I was only informed about things like who our coaches were or the coaching helpdesk a few weeks after I had started in the field. These bits of information would have helped a lot but it taught me to help myself and find out things for myself

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Apart from the work stack taking preference over training I have found when we had training we were well supported. At times I found some hoops had to be jumped through to get my qualification complete. But days booked off and help to get things complete overall has progressed well

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I would not be able to do this job without the training provided. It is essential to our role to have the correct training for our role. Some of the items on the qualifications are useless to our roles. It wastes time getting it done but at the end of the day it has to be done

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • No I don’t not participate in any extra curricular activities with my work team or corporation. I have actually not been presented with any of the listed activities within my company. I would perhaps be interested in some events but the other problem is the placement of them in relation to where I live

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • As a career it is a good one. You do not have to remain as an engineer as there are always jobs be listed on the online portal. The opportunity to advance your pay and the overtime is good if you want to make more money. Your provided with everything you need to do your job without having to spend money on anything

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Come in with an open mind and an willingness to learn. You won’t always get what is being taught straight away but you are always provided more opportunity to learn. You will always be given what you need but you need to make sure you do what your taught and not what you feel like
