  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am currently doing technical project delivery management. This is essentially project management. It involves me liaising with stakeholders such as the design, oss, test and live operations teams in order to ensure new products and services are rolled out to our customers on time. This has given me valuable skills for the future.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My confidence has really improved as this role throws you straight in the deep end! Straight away I had to host calls and take a lead in conversations which I would never normally do. I have enhanced my people skills, learned new ways to get the job done whilst pleasing everyone.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Although my operational role at BT is really good, the apprenticeship programme hasn't been so good. My year in particular has had to do things that we didn't sign up to do, and these weren't explained to us when we accepted our jobs (the new trailblazer stuff- CCENT, Portfolios, knowledge modules, synoptic project etc). We have had very little support and information regarding all of these and no one seems sure what is happening...

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Similar to what was said above, no-one really seems to know the answers to our questions when we ask when various things will happen or for more information. At times I feel like im chasing dates for my own exams/assessments which isn't right. If we are expected to complete all these additional things, then there should be additional support.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My line manager has always been really supportive from an operational point of view and any work-related issues have always been dealt with effectively. We are provided with an apprentice coach, and an apprentice team but it is not clear who deals with what. Again, neither know much about the new trailblazer stuff and no additional support has been provided which is very disappointing.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The fact im unsure who/what my training provider is answers this question... I'm guessing its my university? In which case support is down to individual lecturers. Some are good and reply quickly to emails, they give helpful advice and genuinely want you to do well. Then others never reply to emails, are very vague with their expectations and do not care so much.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Unfortunately the degree and qualifications I am doing are very technical and I do not do a technical role. It would have been more beneficial for me to have done a business qualification as this would have been more relevant and probably more appropriate for a wide range of people.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, I work at Adastral Park which is the largest BT site. There are lots of opportunities to get involved with a variety of extra-curricular activities including volunteering, women in tech events, sports. Just this week I am competing with my team in a charity dodge ball competition, so there is plenty to get involved with!

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • BT is a fantastic company to work for. There are so many opportunities to have a really successful career, and it has some of the best people in the industry. It is a shame that the new style apprenticeship doesn't work. In future you should make sure people sign up and are happy to do the new trailblazer, rather than tell people you've changed it in their first week........

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • BT is a fantastic place to work, but whilst on the apprenticeship be prepared to have to work in your evenings and weekends (this was not explained to me) and be prepared for lots of change and people not knowing what's going on... Communication needs to be improved as it's currently not good enough.
