  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Everyday is never the same which is one of the best parts of the job as you are always busy with something different. We carry out firefighter drills most days to keep refreshed on our training as well keeping up to date with our written work (portfolios of practice tests and what we have completed during our drills). We also have speeches to practice and complete about firefighter equipment every week.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned many new skills from completing a variety of courses such as IEC (immediate emergency care), swift water rescue, rope rescue, as well as completing my initial firefighter training where I gained a wide range of knowledge about the job. I have also developed on existing skills such as time keeping and organisation as I have to be on top of my work and keep my uniform and kit clean regularly.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is very organised as we are always busy with something to do everyday. It is always ensured that we meet required targets and we have regular checks through our portfolios to ensure that we are all on track and if anything needs done. During our initial training we had a structured planner of what we were doing each week which was very organised and we now plan out what we are going to do each day.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a great amount of support as my employer is always ensured that I am up to date with my portfolio as well as encouraging me during physical tasks which I may find difficult. My employer is always there if I have any enquiries or questions as well as being supportive with anything that isn't work related and making sure we feel comfortable in the workplace.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • During my initial 12 week firefighter training I had the opportunity to attend a wide range of enjoyable and team building courses. This included a day in the Lake District doing orienteering and abseiling working with new people. Also, we socialise outside of work meeting up and getting an opportunity to spend time with each other outside of work.
