I am an apprentice Firefighter at Sellafield Ltd, On a day to day basis we do drills on the different scenarios we may face and do research into the different equipment we will be using when we become operational, this means we will know exactly what to do when we come to do it in a real life situation.
The knowledge I have gained through my apprenticeship is unbelievable, I have learned way more than I imagined as before I started my apprenticeship I didn't appreciate the great depth of what Fire fighters do day in, day out. I have developed a lot of my skills also as I can now work much better in a team as this is required a lot within my job role.
I absolutely love my job, a lot of my friends dread going to work after the weekend but I have a sense of excitement as we never know what were going to face in the up coming week. I feel my job has became more of a hobby I enjoy it that much rather than a job.
My apprenticeship has been very well organised as at the start of my apprenticeship me and my fellow apprentices were signed up to do a 12 week intense Fire fighting course with Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service so this gave us a great deal of knowledge and learnt a lot of what we will be doing within our apprenticeship right at the start. My instructor [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] also keeps our programme jam packed with things to do/ courses to go on so were always busy and kept learning.
I have received a lot of support from my employer. My employer has chose the perfect person to teach and progress us apprentices. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] will always be there when help is needed and explain things whenever any of us are struggling! We also have the opportunity to attend courses when needed to learn new skills in which we need.
We get monthly reviews from our training provider but we aren't at the building much as our apprenticeship is fully work based but I think as Fire fighters this is perfect as it wouldn't benefit us much if we had to go sit in a class room as our jobs are more hand on/physical.
My qualification means I am able to learn a lot along side my job so that I am never struggling. It fits in perfectly, I am learning about the equipment I am using and things I need to be doing within my qualification along side being a Fire-fighter rather than just being fully threw in, so I think this makes me a better Fire fighter.
I only started my apprenticeship in September so I'm not quite yet fully aware of everything extra but I know there are opportunities for extra-curricular activities. My employer does a lot for charity so there is always things going on I could join in with to do with the likes of sports etc.
Yes
Because I love my job so much I would definitely recommend it to a friend but not just because of that, my employer offers bonus and thanks etc. when targets are met so you feel like you're rewarded for your hard work which makes you want to work even harder.
I would just go for it and believe in yourself, its a great company to work for! Try taking part in community events, joining sports clubs and things like that as it always looks good to show you do things like this in your interview and I think people like this is what my company looks for.
