Maintenance Technician Review

My role as a maintenance technician involves both mechanical and electrical tasks whilst on site. On a day to day, as I'm working within the central workshop at the moment, will involve fitting jobs, metal work along with machining. So I could either be working within the workshop or out in a department!

Before starting my apprenticeship I'd already completed a level 3 qualification so this has not only built on my skills within machining and hand fitting but also let me learn how to do welding, gas cutting as well as proper lifting techniques. Among many other skills such as time keeping, food safety etc.

I love being on site as I really enjoy just getting stuck in as I'm a hands on learner. The college blocks, so the academic side, is as you imagine.... sometimes tedious. But all in all it ain't too bad for classroom based learning. We also live away for our college blocks and get everything paid for, including food, accommodation and fuel. So that makes up for the rest. But I can't stress how much I enjoy working on site.

We're starting a fresh apprenticeship scheme and as the first ones going through there's bound to be creases that'll get ironed out for future groups. But I knew this going into my apprenticeship so for it being new for both the learner and the teacher it's not terrible. For instance we may miss something off but we always get back round to doing it.

All they want us to do is to do the best we possibly can! But at the same time making sure it's done off my own merit. Basically meaning I'll get as much support to a certain point which I believe is perfect! So i will always know what i need to do and when its needed to be done by. If im falling behind they will also ensure I utilise all my time to complete it!

The best possible amount you could ask for without it being spoon fed. Really pleased with how they prepare us for all the assignments and exams. This is because they will teach the whole subject matter and then really focus on whats need for the exams or assignments so when it comes to completing them then it's a doddle! Makes you never forget the subject matter too.

Certainly gives me a good base knowledge or helps me build on what I already know to do better in the workplace! I'm yet to not use something learnt at college as even the little things you're not quite sure you'll ever need always come in handy when you least expect it!

Yes, there's a hive of activities I get sink my teeth into from cycling to skiing, walking to even taste testing and whenever there's a new event starting I will get an email informing me about it. The best thing about all of them is that you personally don't have to pay for it and if the activities are in works time then you won't be expected to use your holidays to do them!

Because the works excellent, who doesn't want to work in a chocolate factory? The learnings brilliant and you'll get treated like an equal to everyone already working there! Feel like I'm on cloud 9 with my apprenticeship. Couldn't fault it one bit and I'm always bugging it up to my friends and family!

You'll always hear this a lot, but just honestly be yourself! I didn't put one of those interview faces on when I did my assessment day as I was just myself and I believe that's the reason I got the job. They domt want someone who's already got all the skills, they're looking for someone who's willing to learn and put all their effort into it.
