  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • as a cabler, I pick up jobs on a day to day basis. each morning I check the "my jobs" app on my phone to see where the job is located, and which cable im required to collect for the job. Once the cable is on the van, myself and my team mate will then go out and complete the task at hand.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • im a big believer in "every day is a school day". Each and every day my skill set is broadened, whether developing new skills or polishing up old ones. This could be anything from testing my strength pulling cable, new techniques getting it through tight spaces or even communication skills and dealing with end customers.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I absolutely love coming home knowing ive done well during the day. The amount of new friends ive made along the way is a massive enjoyable part for me, and gradually picking up new ict skills is very satisfying. I genuinely enjoy this apprenticeship, its opened up many doors for my future career, and without it I wouldn't be able to continue moving forward within openreach.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I find the program to be quite well organised. everytime im on a training course, I have an email off my assessor, and my manager to make sure I wont miss it. The same go's for NVQ workshop days also. Ive always been pointed in the right direction and never had a problem with any of the structure of the program.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer and assessor both offer me all the support I could ever need. They are very relaxed and make me feel comfortable within my workplace. If im ever stuck with anything, or incur any problems all I have to do is email or call them, and they always point me in the right direction re-assuring me theyre with me the whole way. As time has gone on I find myself needed less and less support, so I guess that means were all doing something right.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification has mostly made me feel a lot more comfortable with technology. Ive never been great with computers, but I have now got to grips with all the basics and much more advanced things. In my job role, it has helped me understand things better, listening and understanding my work friends and customers.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • As far as im aware a lot of the engineers have days out together, and there is opportunities to go to the BT tower as well as many other things. There are also lots of groups on social media, just to chat with likeminded people, and discuss personal matters, or even just for general chit chat.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I already have! and number of my friends and my cousin are actually waiting for assessment days. The reason I was trying to get them on board is purely for the reason of how good a place it is to work for, everyone is keen to help each other, inside and outside of work.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Be yourself. Relax, the interviews are not your run of the mill interviews. the assessment and recruitment team are diamonds, they understand how nervous and stressful the process can be and always endeavour to make it as easy and as smooth as possible. Always remember, first impressions do count and it is imperative you do your best.
