  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is to deliver Ethernet services to businesses across the country. The tasks involved include remotely faulting copper pairs, speaking to engineers when commissioning circuits and dealing with orders that are failing to progress. Furthermore, we have to communicate regularly with order management teams to ensure that the service is installed on the required by date.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt various skills such as finding faults in copper pairs, commissioning and communicating with engineers, planning tasks and resolving system issues. However, I feel that I became fully competent with the roles on my team after about 12 months yet I am still on the team after 17 months and feel that I could have rotated much sooner and started to learn new technologies.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Overall, I have enjoyed my apprenticeship so far as I have learnt new skills that I would not be able to learn anywhere else and I have had opportunities to attend BT events in other areas of the organisation. Furthermore, I enjoyed attending my BTEC course where I got to learn about IT networks in depth.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is structured to a degree but does not necessarily meet the expectations I had when we started. For instance, we were told that we would rotate between teams every 6 months within our apprenticeship. However, this has only been the case for some apprentices and not others. Regarding my NVQ and BTEC qualifications, I was well informed of the milestones I needed to compete and by when.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive appropriate support for mitigating circumstances such as granted leave for out of work emergencies. We have received appropriate training and support for us to carry out our job roles proficiently. More support regarding career development such as allowing opportunities for project rotation and open days could be improved.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I received full support when completing my related BTEC qualification from the training provider. My NVQ support is provided internally and I have received minimal support. This could be improved by providing more frequent meetings with my coach and more opportunities to use our study days to explore other areas of the business.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that the BTEC IT networks qualification provided me with the appropriate background information for me to enter the work force with reasonable understanding of the roles and technology. However, the NVQ qualification provides very little benefit for myself, as most of the assignments are too elementary e.g. how to send an email, or irrelevant for our roles.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I have attended several networking events including visits to BT sports studio, Adastral park and Yarnfield park. These were very beneficial and allowed us to network with colleagues based in different areas of the country and company. My current area of work has far less events or opportunities mainly due to the lack of participation from colleagues here.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Overall, I feel that the BT apprenticeship is excellent for providing a rewarding salary, opportunities to network and to learn new skills that provide a service to businesses and residents around the country. The main reason I applied for the apprenticeship was because the salary is financially viable unlike most apprenticeships out there.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • I would say to others that are applying to BT to first research the company and prepare for the application stages through mock interviews. BT attracts a lot of applicants and only those that prove they are reliable and have initiative will be considered. Furthermore, prepare real life examples of how you have proved all the skills that the employer will be looking for.
