  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I help my team advise clients on specific Value Added Tax issues. This is more of a consulting role than anything, and I work with a broad range of clients in different countries giving technical advice on all sorts of Value Added Tax issues. Alongside this I am studying towards my qualifications.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills throughout my time at Deloitte on the level seven apprenticeship. These include harnessing my written and verbal communication skills, as well as increasing my technical tax knowledge to a high standards. I have also learnt to interact with clients and win new work for our firm.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my time in the office and my role withing the company, however I have found the apprenticeship experience quite stressful as we have had many issues getting accurate information about our course through from the training provider. In general, this has added to negative feelings around the apprenticeship experience.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Please see the comment above regarding a lack of communication around what the programme involves and the timings ogf our various exams. The actual tuition on the programme has been good and I have really enjoyed learning more about accounting and taxation. There does, however, seem to be a general lack of knowledge about what we have to do to complete the programme.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My direct team have been fantastic with supporting me on exam leave. However, the central team have not been very forthcoming with information on our exam schedule or other requirements we need to meet in order to complete the apprenticeship to a high standard and by the correct time. I think the communication around this could easily be improved.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • As stated above in various question answers, the training provider has provided useful and supporting tutros who have helped me immensely in studying towards my exams. However, one of the ways we learn is via online classroom lessons. These are largely unhelpful as I have to sit at a desk watching a lecture without being able to proerly interract (beyond a chat panel) between 9 - 5. Spending all day in my living room can feel quite alienating and something this means I don't spend the day with other human beings for a week at a time.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think my qualifications are essential to me being able to perform in my role in the work place. Particularly, the Value Added Tax technical knowledge I have gathered from my studies towards becoming a chartered tax advisor with the CIOT. I think all students working in my role are required to undertake these examinations.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • My team are incredibly sociable and have given me a warm welcome when joining the firm. I have also been involved in playing for the netball team as well as going on a weekend trip to Prague to attend an international Deloitte football tournament which was a really great experience which I would recommend to all.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Deloitte to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have had a really good time working at Deloitte so far. However, I would caution anyone applying that the experience can be incredibly frustrating at times. This is especially due to a lack of communication around examinations, which is partly due to Deloitte but also due to Kaplan financial.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Deloitte?
  • Make sure you have a good grasp of what your day to day role will be and whether you would be a good fit for this type of work. Maybe get in touch with someone from the team you are applying to and ask them what an average day in their life looks like.
