  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is a Tech Apprentice at GSK Ulverston. My role focuses on Site Tech which means looking at the service side of IT to ensure the service is always running as it should. If any problems occur Site Tech are the first point of contact. I am studying towards a degree in Computing and IT with the Open University and have previously completed a BTEC Level 4 in my first 2 years.

  • I have developed many new skills in this apprenticeship. I have developed many computer based skills which I can use in every day life. • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my apprenticeship at GSK. Being part of a small community means that you get the right focused attention in order to progress to the best apprentice you can be. Everyone is so friendly and helpful which makes part of the programme enjoyable. The programme is designed to get the best out of you that you can.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My apprenticeship is well structured. In the first two years I complete a BTEC level 4 course which runs parallel to the University degree course which carries on for the 3rd year. The modules are all set out and you are made aware of the timings of these throughout your programme.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my employer, especially my line manager and the apprentice manager. They are always there for support and are trusting no matter what you tell them. My employer wants to develop apprentices as much as they can to get the best results and the best people working for the company.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I do not receive that much support from my training provider, however if I ever needed help they are only an email away. I don't feel that they are always helping you if you are getting on with the work. A little bit more guidance would be good to know you are doing the work right.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The training has given me good understanding of Information technologies and how they are used everywhere no matter what the business industry. The qualifications are helpful for the work that I do. I feel that I know more about my role due to the qualification i have completed. The BTEC looks at tasks you have completed in the work environment and it makes you realise how much you actually do.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there are many extra curricular activities to get involved in at GSK. There is a gym and a football team that you can get involved in. Also there are many events held throughout the year in the community, such as Dragon Boat Racing which is a local event to race your boat alongside the river in a competition. Also there are Yoga classes and voluntary activities such as Orange Days.

  • 9a. Would you recommend GSK to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • GSK is a great company to work for as it makes life saving medicines that save peoples lives. Knowing that GSK provides people with healthcare benefits makes you want to do more. GSK has a great apprenticeship programme that focuses highly on the development of young people to fit into the business. They take great care of their people and are a great company to work for. I feel proud to work for GSK.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to GSK?
  • Before applying you should research the company to understand what we do before applying. You need to be certain that you would enjoy the role. For me, I attended some open evening to talk to people who work here before applying to understand what the role consists of and if you would be suitable.
