  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an apprentice Process Technician at GSK Ulverston my role is to oversee and control the processes involved in the manufacture of pharmaceutical products. On a day-to-day basis this involves shadowing experienced process operators and learning the details of the different buildings and areas of the site in order to gain a broad understanding of all areas.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my skills in speaking and working as part of a team to achieve an objective, I have also furthered my ability to manage my own time and work life effectively. New skills I have learned include engineering and electrical knowledge as well as proficiency with hand tools.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have enjoyed meeting a diverse range of people and getting involved with different events within the company. Due to the nature of rotations around the site I am able to learn and understand all areas of the site. I also feel as if my contribution is valued and that my managers take an interest in my development.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is well structured with regular check-ins with my apprentice manager to monitor my progress as well as any concerns I may have concerning the programme and my development. My work life is balanced around on the job learning and spending one day a week in the classroom working towards my technical qualification.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a good amount of support from my employer with regards to my development and progression on the course. Any concerns I have at work or outside are addressed promptly and I feel as if my voice makes a difference. I have a lot of control and responsibility for my own development which I appreciate.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider has provided me with the basic engineering skills needed for a career in an engineering field. With regards to my technical qualification, I am fully supported throughout the training program and my tutor is very helpful in answering any questions or concerns I may have regarding my development.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My training provider has provided me with a greater technical understanding and knowledge of scientific and engineering concepts which have in turn allowed me to better understand my role at work. During my classroom learning at college I have acquired an understanding of the processes which are essential to my role at work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At work I am often involved in social activities with other apprentices, we also are encouraged to take part in activities which give back to the local community in which our site is based. There are also a wide range of courses which take place during work hours which allow me to further my personal development.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend GSK as it offers a chance to be a part of a global company involved in helping countless people across the globe. As part of the pharmaceuticals division of GSK the work I do has a tangible impact by manufacturing life-saving antibiotics which are sold and used across the world.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to GSK?
  • The biggest piece of advice I would give to someone applying to GSK is to always adhere to and live by the company's core values: Trust, Respect for people, Integrity and Patient Focus. If you can demonstrate that you hold and live by these values on a daily basis, you are the ideal candidate for GSK.
