  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • User Experience researcher and designer. This role involves trying to allow Companies such as BT to work in a Agile manner, with having Users at the very heart of everything we do. By involving the users as much as possible, we can find out what a user would truly want in terms of a project. this means we will be delivering actually useful applications that will get used.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes. I have learnt how involving a user will benefit the business in the long run. by giving users what they want, internal/external users will be satisfied. I have learnt how to research, develop and test with users always in the back of my mind. this provides a worthwhile experience for users.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I like the other apprentices, how we can all rely on each other if we become stuck. there are so many different apprentices that excel in different areas, so as a whole, there is someone that help if you are in need. I like being involved as part of a team and gaining work experience on the job that I would not if I just went to university.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • To be fair, as we were forced to rotate into different areas of the business to get a better understanding of how BT operates, you would think that every team/role you go into, there would be enough work to be done. Some areas are more structured than others. some areas were very busy and some were not. I guess its just the luck of the raw in which team you join.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • there are so many forms of support as an apprentices. As said above, you have other apprentices, ex-apprentices, team members, line and operational managers, apprentice coaches, uni lecturers and the whole f the internet which can support and help you in your apprenticeship. BT definitely supports you as much as they can.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I mean, all universities require a lot of independent research. I definitely don't use the full potential that UoS offers. But I feel if I needed extra support, I would be able to receive it. there are so many resources online, other apprentices and ex-apprentices I definitely find the most useful when it comes down to work that I could struggle with.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel in this day and age, a degree doesn't mean as much as what it used to. I find that experience is the main progressive way to improve your career. I see myself staying at BT as long as possible as there are so may different roles across the business. I personally don't see a how my uni course applies to my job role specifically, but it is eye opening to see how someone such as a developer may go about their work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • there are soooooo many different programs, seminars and knowledge calls, its hard to keep track of. there is probably a call or event specific to any interests that you have. Adastral park in Ipswich has a sports hall, tennis courts and different clubs, just at this site. I however don't attend any.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Get paid to get a degree, work experience, unlimited amount of opportunities, from volunteering to other visits of different areas (highly recommend BT TV). the other apprentices and the apprentice network in general is second to none. the pay is decent and some of the projects you could work on may have a public impact on users.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Be yourself. there really isn't any need to 'fit in' at BT. everyone has their skills and needs, there is always someone to help and support you. If you are open about yourself (especially in the interview stages), then there is nothing to hide (wouldn't recommend admitting you killed your cat)
