  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I operate various CNC machines to produce complex steel components specific to the Martin-Baker product. Along side this I have aquired skills to Non-destrutively test, inspect, assemble and paint these components to a high standard. Manual handling course, abrasive wheels course, inspection courses and paint spraying qualifications have been recieved from my job.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Everything evolved has been a learning process for me, from measuring techniques, co-ordinate measuring machine, CNC coding, CNC operation, pressure testing, magnetic particle, Pyro machining and paint spraying to effectively working as a team. All of these skills enable me to complete my daily activities to the standard that Martin-Baker strive for.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Martin-Baker thus far, I have gained a monumental amount of skills and knowledge, which can only been recieved in a practical method, rather than theoretical. I feel you learn a lot more from completeing taks in a hands on environment and learning from people who have years of experience when compared to a text book.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I would say that the programme is relatively structured, the pay is progressive with a clear progression through it. The academic side is very well strucutured, you go from one level to the next until you reach the level at which your employer desires or is willing to support you through. The strucuture at which you learn skills in the company and your movement throughout it, is a little less structured. Poor clarity can be a hindrence as to where you will work throughout the four years.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • From my section leader I recieved 100% support, whenever I have asked for time, advise or anything he has been willing to assist to no end. When asking for assistance from colleagues they have all been more than willing to help, pointing me in the right direction. The compnay have financially supported me 100 %.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • When with Activate learning the teaching was sub-standard and I lost interest, the tutors were not suffecient at teaching to convey the correct information. When chaning to Uxbridge College (not in database) I found this interest again and the support is second to none. The tutors have a real passion for teaching.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It provides technical knowledge which I can apply in my job and daily life, permitting me to technically and practically approach, overcome and solve any problem which I am faced with. Without this knowledge it would be difficult to understand and interpret, drawings, technical data, information, jargon and other engineering slang used.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Not that I am aware of, I believe at the Martin-Baker Denham site that there is a social club which you can attend, however I have not been made aware of one at the Martin-Baker Chalgrove site. I do know that some members of staff meet up outside of work in a social aspect.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Martin-Baker to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a good stable company, where job security is almost gaurenteed. The company being private means there is an increased level of care throughout, you do feel like a family, sometimes for the better, other times for the worse. You are manufacturing a life saving component which is truly interesting, and there isn't something quite as rewarding as that.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Martin-Baker?
  • Make sure that you do your research into the company, nothing shows more to a potential employer than being well armed with information on them. Be keen and show that you are determined and want the job. Ensure that you are smart, presentable and keep phone use to an absolute zero, leave it in your car.
