  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor is very varied and interesting. I spend time in the office looking after subcontractor packages doing things such as valuations, payment notices and generally looking after any queries. Furthermore I am in charge of costing the tickets of plant and material items on site which is interesting and challenging. I also go on the site daily to take general progress photographs and look at the progress of my own packages. I also spend 1 day a week at the office closer to home so I can focus on my degree studies.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a number of skills and I am constantly developing my existing skills through my daily interactions and the tasks I undertake. I have improved and developed my communication skills both online and face to face as you are always working with other people to solve issues. Therefore it is no surprise that I have improved my collaboration skills. There is a lot of terminology and knowledge about the construction industry which was new to me and learning on the job has helped me pick It up quickly.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the programme as I am able to learn a profession I am interested in on the job, which I get paid for, but at the same time I am still able to complete a degree as if I was at university. This means I have the bets of both worlds and I can learn quicker and have greater experience in the profession than I would by just doing the degree at a university full time.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure is very well organised. I go to work four days a week and then have one day a week, which I am able to choose, doing my university degree study. This allows me to have good time management to balance both my work on the job and work for my degree.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer has given me support in all aspects of the job. There is great welfare support from the employer which deals with any social issues. Furthermore every apprentice is assigned to a line manager who they report to. This means there is always someone to talk to if there is any struggles with the work you are doing or have any other queries.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider is excellent in terms of giving me support. They have specialist teams for any type of query you might have ie. poor health, having a baby etc. The academic support is also very good and the tutors will always reply as quick as possible and give the best support that they can.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The modules which you learn about are all very relevant to the job role and therefore I try to implement the knowledge I gain from my degree into my role at work. Therefore I am able to understand what is going on and how to complete tasks a lot easier due to the qualification that I am gaining.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At my site we have had a gym installed for staff to use for free before or after work which is great. The company also has a lot of social events for staff to enjoy. There has been 5 or 6 in the time In the last 6 months. Some examples of events include staff balls with hotels to stay in, cocktail bars, restaurants, bowling and watching motor racing.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend John Sisk to a friend because they are a very well organised company who look after their staff well. There is always a positive and friendly atmosphere from the staff on any site or office which makes it a nice atmosphere to work in. There is also lots of benefits which Sisk provide to its staff which shows their appreciation of the staff.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to John Sisk & Sons?
  • If you are applying for John Sisk you need to be a warm and approachable character with a goal to succeed in everything that you do. I would recommend that you go to any interview smart and presentable and make sure that you are knowledgeable about what you are applying for and to be honest about yourself.
