  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I spend a lot of time speaking to clients and processing client information in order to include this information on their tax returns. I also help to answer client queries regarding tax advice. I spend a lot of time doing more numerical calculations. I work in a big team and work in many different separate client teams.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a lot of skills surrounding organisation and how to work in a team -- it is very different to work at University. I have developed my financial and tax knowledge a lot, particularly during my professional exams. I am currently studying towards my ACA CTA exams. I attend lots of internal and external training courses.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme is hard work and challenging which makes it enjoyable, as I would not enjoy a job which was too easy. I work in a close knit team which I enjoy as we go on a lot of socials. The company culture is to work hard but you get rewarded for this.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • A lot of our exam and professional learning team do not understand which exams we are sitting or what our apprenticeship entails and we have had a lot of issues surrounding lack of direction, for example being given the incorrect exam dates. We get a lot of support surrounding exams, which are the main part of our apprenticeship.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my employer, particularly surrounding exams. We get sufficient time off to study and the team understand that the exams are difficult. We each have a coach and a team leader who we can go to if we have issues, and have regular check ins with.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We receive full support from our training providers, as they are the ones who essentially teach us the material. The tutors are generally very knowledgeable and can answer pretty much any question that you have. There is also a lot of online help which is useful, as well as plenty of mock exams.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I have learnt a lot about general finance and tax which I have been able to apply to my role. This has been new knowledge which is really useful in putting my work into context as I understand more generally the financial and accounting information which I am being provided.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are a lot of extra curricular activities to get involved in with work. There are sports team which include football and netball which meet weekly to play, as well as plenty of volunteering opportunities which come up throughout the year. There are also a lot of socials which help team bonding.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Deloitte to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I enjoy working here and I think that it is a respectable role. It is difficult at times however is also quite rewarding and there is a lot of extracurricular things to do, which is one of the benefits of working for a large company. Also generally everyone that works here is experienced in the role and you can learn a lot from them.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Deloitte?
  • I would advise them to take their time over their applications to ensure that they are putting themselves forward in the best possible way. Be confident in interviews and try to calm down and act normal, they are just people. I would also advise to apply as soon as the jobs are released, as they can often go very quickly.
