  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Softcat is incredibly interesting to work for. Very welcoming, regardless of age and job role. Very supportive from day one, with a very small team to manager ratio. Any issues with anything you can literally talk to anyone about it and they will help. As a company, they slowly start to increase your day to day responsibilities as and when you are ready for them and continue to support you no matter what.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Interpersonal skills have been greatly improved. Working as part of a team, communication, writing skills, decision making, asking for help, time management, document production, leading meetings. Problem-solving and being able to identify areas for improvement have been developed. And with personal development reviews twice a year all skills will continue to be reviewed and improved.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my job role, but would not consider this my programme. I would consider my programme the parts of my day/week that are not to do with my day to day job role. This does, however, lead to some very helpful and useful training to improve my general ability and skills

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Externally from GK Apprenticeships, it appears to be organised/structured but we have suffered from a change in development coach which has lead to a mix in what they believe we need to do and how we need to do it. Internally we have regular 1-2-1's with managers, mentors and learning and development to keep us on track

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As much as we could ever want or need, but very cleverly it is done on an ask and you shall receive basis. We do have regular 1-2-1's with managers, mentors, external development coaches and HR to continuously monitor our progress and gives us the opportunity to ask for help.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • With our original development coach support was very good, but it felt like their understanding of the program was not fantastic. With our new development coach having been an apprentice in the past it feels like the level of support has greatly increased. It has only been three weeks since the swap but things are looking great

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I don't, at all. The qualification does not teach you any new skill. We are required to simply show when we have performed skills they deem to be important in our day to day role, without any training on how to perform these skills. Not brilliant but maybe the self-taught technique is better.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, loads, from Wednesday morning stretching sessions to Christmas parties. As a company we hold a yearly 'kick off' where there is a chance for the entire company to get together in one place. In the summer there are after work sports teams that even hold office against office matches.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Softcat to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I get the feeling they genuinely care about you, not just as an employee, but as a person. Great working environment, pretty good office facilities, great benefits and fantastic opportunities to progress your career. However being such a great company, you would need to wait an incredibly long time before you would be able to move into a management or director position as they don't want to leave. Which is a good sign

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Softcat?
  • Genuinely be yourself, Softcat are looking for a specific type of person and if you fit that mold then it doesn't matter too much how qualified you are. It matters more that you are willing to put in the work to better yourself and they will put you forward for the qualifications that you need
