  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Most days are different, however I am often assisting other members of the design team, carrying out small tasks for them using computer-aided design software as well as graphical simulation tools. This involves working on a number of the company's ongoing and upcoming projects which gives a good overview of the different projects that the business takes on.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have become a lot more computer literate thanks to the Functional Skills ICT qualification I have completed, which is handy as the majority of my work is computer based. I have also learned a lot about engineering as a whole both in the office and also when at college.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the different aspects of my job role as no two days are the same which makes it exciting. As well as this, having the opportunity to learn a trade from experienced people is good as they can always answer any questions that I may have while at work.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme itself is well structured, with work based training that I need to take in order to better my understanding of my industry being fitted in and around other work activities and time off from college. The college aspect isn't structured quite as well, however this isn't something that can be changed by my employer.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a large amount of support from my employer, both in the workplace and with regards to my college life. Regular reviews with my line manager help, as do continuous support from both managers and other colleagues in my department, with support being on hand pretty much as and when I need it.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider gives me a lot of support with the qualifications I am working towards. I have reviews where my progress is monitored and ways in which I could improve are talked about as well as having regular reviews from the college to my employer to ensure I am working well towards my qualification.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel as if the qualification has helped me massively to perform better in my job role. I had very little understanding of engineering prior to this job, so the practical engineering qualification I took as well as the more academic BTEC qualification have given me a good foundation knowledge.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, there are a number of extra-curricular activities and networking activities to get involved with. These include regular 'social events' including trips to bowling etc... as well as 'coffee roulette' where you meet up and have a coffee with someone else from within the organization which is a good way to meet new people.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Siemens to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would thoroughly recommend Siemens to a friend or family member as they are a good employer to work for, particularly with regards to the apprenticeship scheme. This has given me a good foundation job with a good level of knowledge within a large company with endless opportunities for progression.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Siemens?
  • I would advise those applying to Siemens to ensure that they work hard both with regards to their qualifications and their work based training in order to give themselves the best chance of being successful and ultimately to earn their job at the end of the apprenticeship scheme as this may not be guaranteed.
