  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Main duties are around looking after Warehouse Management System and resolving issues relating to it within a busy Distribution Centre. I'm currently part of a team testing a new system due to be implemented later this year at my site and then rolled out across the business as a whole, which is a huge investment.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I've certainly developed a new way of looking at things and appreciating how different elements of the warehouse operation impact on each other and on the business as a whole. This has helped me improve the way I consider our day to day operation and hopefully to play a bigger part in it.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme is very enjoyable on the whole. If I do have a criticism it is that there is probably too much time between training sessions, however each session has been both enjoyable and informative whilst still managing to cover the usual mandatory requirements and regulations without becoming too boring or repetitive.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is very well structured and organised with the course flowing well and progress has been easy to gauge across the term. We have been encouraged to work as a team and help one another whilst also developing our own skills and knowledge and have come to appreciate the input and views of others far better as a result.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive sufficient support to ensure I am always available to attend the course, even where course dates have had to be changed. The work hours I'm required to sacrifice for each session of the apprenticeship have never been a problem for my employers and my line manager has actively encouraged my participation.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • So far the support has been excellent and I'm confident that if I did have any issues the training provider would be able to assist. We have been given the names and contact details for the course leaders and support team at LEAD and encouraged to contact them if required and when any members of the team have requested additional help it has always been willingly provided.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think the course has helped improved my overall view and attitude towards my own role and those of people around me within the business. This broader perspective has been particularly helpful whilst if been working in the WMS Test Team as it has encouraged me to think beyond the needs of my own role and consider how we can improve things on a broader scale.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, there is a sports and social club and various activities for employees should they wish to partake, and the notice boards around our premises often promote local sporting or social event to encourage staff participation. There is also a very strong focus on charity involvement both on a corporate and personal level.

  • 9a. Would you recommend DHL to a friend?
  • No

  • 9b. Why?
  • From my own experiences I would not. That's not to say they are a bad company to work for by any means; just that in my particular case I have very mixed feelings about them and on that basis would find it difficult to recommend them with an entirely clear conscience.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to DHL?
  • Speak to people that already work for them in the same field, DHL cover a huge range of jobs/roles and whilst they are widely recognised and clearly very good at some aspects of Supply Chain Operations they aren't necessarily specialists in all the areas they operate in. I have little doubt they want to be the provider of choice, but get the impression that too often they are juggling more roles than they can practically handle at times.
