  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Training to be a fully qualified service tech. shadow teams to learn new skills and learn more about the job itself. Working on various projects across London and with different departments e.g. services, mods etc. whilst doing this we are supposed to gather evidence for our NVQ portfolio too.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills whilst working for bombardier transportation. not only mechanical and electrical skills but also social skills and skills that help me deal with different types of people. I have used new tools that I had never seen before and been shown how to use them.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my program, I love going to work and socialising but I also enjoy engineering so I get the best of both worlds from my job. the training program itself is a bit flaky and sometimes I do not get the support I need which is the only downside.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • in my program there is little to none structure or organisation. I don't know whether if this is due to us constantly moving around to various depots in London or due to the fact we have had various managers and some of which are not very good at communicating with us.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The only time we ever receive support from our employer is when we constantly pressure them until they become annoyed with us. they seem to forget about us and leave us to get on with it. If our managers do not help us we go around them to the union and then our managers do something about it and moan at us.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We have been at two different colleges now and the first we received little to nothing it terms of support. they would assign us tasks and assignments, teach us the bare minimum and we would have to struggle and research it ourselves, we recently moved colleges and the standard has improved but due to us not completing much at our prior college we have lots to do in little time which is very hard and the college don't seem to understand that.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I don't feel as though my qualification helps me perform better in my role. I feel that we learn is sometimes very irrelevant and almost pointless. we are taught about things that have no impact or influence on our role and these are often topics we spend a long time on

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • As far as extra curricular activities go then there is very little. the only thing we do is professional events where maybe 2/3 people are chosen. it is unfair as the only colleges that seem to ever be chosen are those of ethnic minority and a woman. I have no issue with these colleagues I just feel that it is unfair.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Bombardier to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend this company to a friend as even though the apprenticeship itself is a bit unorganised and flaky there are a lot of good people who I have met and the company itself is not bad just the training it provides. they pay very well and the work we carry out is not too difficult most of the time.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Bombardier?
  • to others applying, I would tell them to keep their heads down, push the managers and team leaders to help you achieve what you need and ensure that college work is always done on time and to the best of your ability, if you take shortcuts then it will only come back to bite you near the end of your time as an apprentice
