Wind Turbine Technician Review

My role involves travelling offshore everyday on a sea vessel out to the wind turbine field, once at the wind turbine field we drop the teams off until i reach the turbine I am working on. Once on the turbine i carryout either maintenance, service or troubleshooting task with a team of 2 other people

I have learnt many skills from completing 2 years off training at tynemet college where i completed a BTEC level 3 and a gateway assessment. I then learnt lots at hull in the siemens training centre where we was taught many skills to do with working on site. I also learn lots on site

The programme is very enjoyable as we spend a year and a half living away with new people who are doing the same as you while earning a salary and having all my accommodation paid for. Once you get to site your then working a very interesting job which many people are interested about.

The programme is very structured, in the first year you complete a BTEC level 3, the second year you complete a competency programme in mechatronics before completing a gateway assessment. The third and fourth year is at site where you learn your skills which will help when fully qualified in the future.

The employer always supports you by giving you everything you need to complete the course as well as supplying you with ipads, phones and laptops to keep in contact with them. These are mainly used to complete your portfolios while studying. Your employer is always a phone call or email away.

You receive lots of support from your trainers, when at college you have many tutors as well as having a tutor who looks after you and your group. These support you and college while also having your employer regularly checking up on you as well as everyone at site and the training centre.

All the training that you complete helps in your everyday role, whether this is at college, at the training centre or at site everything you learn helps you perform in your everyday role as a technician. Everything you learn will eventually come in handy even when you don't believe it will

There's not to many extra curricular activities to get involved with however at the end of the second year you take part in a charity event. Here you help out and help the event run which is a good day out and lets you enjoy what your job entails while helping others.

Yes

It's just an all round good apprenticeship which you are supported right the way through. Everyone involved is very friendly and there is always some there to help you if you need it. There are also many opportunities in Siemens which can be explored if you wish to do this.

Just be yourself and enjoy your time away. It is a very exciting and useless apprenticeship so take everything in and just enjoy everything while at college, training or at site as you will benefit massively from it when looking back in the future. Always try your best and push yourself to prove to your employer to.
