  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is to shadow a skilled engineer and assist them in maintaining the trains so they can go out on service as well as fixing any problems that may have arisen so that the trains are fit for use as well as attending college to get my qualifications and

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt and developed a number of different skills. Such as I have developed my existing skills by using the correct tools and equipment safety. As well as ensuring that I meet deadlines set by management for when the work has to be done As well as developing my people skills and working within a team

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the program as you get to meet people from different companies who you can hear about how their depot is different to yours and what are the same as well as you get to learn about other classes of trains. I also enjoy how it is very team based within the work place.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Within college the program is organised and structured as you know what unit you are doing and when. However as we have to go to NTAR for a week we was told quite late on when we are actually going as well as I have noticed that we are not attending in classes so half the class will be going while the other half are in the college.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I believe that I get a reasonable amount of support from my employer as my manager comes into the college to check in on us to see how we are doing and if there is any problems that we have College related or not we can inform her ir ask for advice

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • NTAR comes in every couple of months for a review so we are able to discuss any issues. The tutors with in the college offer support that I may need to ensure that I carry out all tasks to the best of my ability in order to gain my qualifications

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • With the practical units I have learnt a lot about hand skills that you would not use day to day within the work place however as I have carried them out within college I am able to gain experience for when it is needed with in the work place witch will help me perform in my role

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At the moment I do not know if any extra curricular activities within the work place that are planned by the company however there are often nights out such as Christmas doos. However with in college there is often posters that advertise a range of extra curricular activity’s that you are able to do if you wish.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Hitachi to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • As it is a great Opportunity to earn while you learn as well as gaining the experience that is required to become a good engineer. As well as offering a number of different opportunities to progress further if you want to or are capable of doing so. As well as offering great experience.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Hitachi?
  • I would give a number of tips and a range of advice for others who wish to join and that is you need to show and prove that you are able to work within a team as well as being hard working you should also be your self and don’t be afraid
