  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is to learn mechanically and electrical engineering for when I go out in the dockyard after my apprenticeship. This involves using and tools and machines to learn my practical skills most of the week and once a week I go into a classroom to learn my theory side of engineering and what I need to know.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes I have learnt how to make and wire circuits and circuit boards on my electrical side so far, learnt how to file and saw materials to very fine measurements to 0.2mm, I now know much more knowledge on my engineering materials and the different types of tools their are in engineering and it has only be 4 months.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy is very much, I enjoy coming each day to learn a skill and trade im going to be able to use for life. I also enjoy the instructors I work with as they are very friendly and make working much more enjoyable. I also enjoy it because as time goes on I can start to see myself developing and learning engineering.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • We have a good and organised timings of our day and know exactly what we have and are doing for the week ahead. We have structured breaks that need to be kept too as we cant be late back to our working. We always know what we have to do and if we don't we can very easily go and speak to our instructor who will tell us where to go and what to do clearly.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We receive lots of support as we have people we can go to if we have problems with things such as colleagues or problems with the work, we even have people to go to if we need help with our problems outside of work. We receive lots of help and one on one time with someone if we aren't understanding something and won't move on until we are ready.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We can speak to our instructors telling them we don't understand something and they will walk you through it one on one and try explain it to you more clear and slower until you get it, we also have a website that shows us our progress to achieving our qualification and how much percentage we have done and got left.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • it gives us the ability to work in the dockyard aboard ships or where our placement is. we also will get the ability to use machines and tools that people can't use without the right training as they are lethal equipment if used wrong. I also will feel more confident when working on my work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We have naval boat activity which is making and designing a boat that floats and runs the best against other colleges or apprentices and who ever gets the furthest with the most weight wins. we also went to lake district to do team bonding activities like kayaking, gorge walking, mountain climbs ect which was a very good life experience that for someone like me living in the south.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • you gain an amazing life skill and trade. you get to make new friends and meet new people that you would not of met before. you enter a working facility that not everyone is allowed to enter and see which is very unique. the pay is very good for an apprentice. the company is very supportive and loyal to you and help you with everything you need and working here is enjoyable as a whole.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • make sure you take the interview serious as if it was a proper job and are organised when it comes and have practised lots of questions. make sure you get yourself some experience in a working environment if you have never before so you know what you're getting into. make sure when you give your cv in use unique points about yourself that makes you stand out to get the interview.
