  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job role involves many activity's such as working within the training centre to develop my engineering skills so I can be ready to start work on the dock yard maintaining and servicing the ships such as the new carrier HMS Queen Elisabeth while she is in the dock yard

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • As a pipe worker I have learned many different skills such as plasma cutting, gas cutting, soft soldering, silver soldering, pipe bending, annealing. As well as hand skills like filing, cutting, drilling, tapping and reaming. Also marking out techniques such as using a vernier, micrometre, and a vernier height gage.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy it to a large extent from when I first started in September 2019 and feel I have bonded well with a team of skilled apprentices and have learned a vast amount with the help of the skilled instructors who have a lot of experience and are always willing to help you progress.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is very well organised and structured it involves a quick induction at the start with a well run and organised week of setting up. For the rest of the apprenticeship the days are laid out clearly and there is a solid structure in what you are doing each day.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a large amount of support from my employer as BAE systems is a worldwide company know for looking after its employees. There is a health plan and a fantastic occupational health system that can be used for any needs as well as a good helpline that can help you with any problems.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I get a large amount of support from my training provide when working towards to my qualifications the instructors are always willing to help with any paper work and can always give me extra support and help if I have any issues with the work im doing at the time.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel the that the qualification can help me perform better at my job when working in the dockyard it will give me the skills and knowledge to be able to work efficiently and meet the criteria needed when working. It also gives me experience with in the company itself.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is a team building exercise with in the lake district that builds bonds with your other colleagues and helps you use your ability's to the best. The royal navy challenge also helps you work on a project that goes against others teams and sees who creates the best model.

  • Yes

  • It is a good company to start with in as it can give you a wide background into the defence industry it can open at lot of doors and give you a wide range of skills that can be used in many other trades and industry's within engineering and mechanics

  • What tips or advice would you give to others applying to I would say to take your time into looking into the company and how they work what there morals are and where they are based. I would take notes and look into what role you are interested in at bae
