  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a mechanical fitter, you spend the first year having a balanced mix between practical and theory work. Practical work will include engine stripping and learning about the different parts and how the function. Theory work includes learning about the different types of maintenance and the benefits of each type.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since starting the apprentice ship, I have learnt a great range of new skills which will help me to progress. these include the basics of working on an engine including stripping it down and checking specifications and tolerances of certain parts. I have also developed skills using hand tools such as files and how to measure using vernier and micrometres.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the program I have been selected in because it gives an opportunity to learn a vast range of new skills. in addition to this I enjoy the mixed balance of practical and theory work. The company sets out the whole apprentice in a structured and ordered way so that you can make the most of it.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The apprenticeship I am involved within has been structured in a appropriate way. It has been structured so that you can learn the correct information throughout the 3 - 4 year apprenticeship. By organising it so that the first year is spent in the training centre allows you to understand your role and learn the skills before you go out.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The employer, BAE systems give loads of support. There is a health centres to ensure you stay healthy at work, the company have support groups for mental health and other great benefits. There are multiple safeguarding policy's in place so that you always feel safe and the company supports you with any problems you may have.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • When working to get your qualifications there is always support to ensure you have the required amount of knowledge before starting. There are structured lessons that take place to cover all topics in the upcoming exams which are organised appropriately. When an exam is upcoming instructors ensure you are ready .

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualifications you will gain when you have completed the apprenticeship will allow you to feel confident and competent when you move into the job role. By receiving the qualifications it ensures you have had the correct training to progress and perform well as you move on. I think the qualifications are beneficial and the training received will help to perform better.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • so far there have been a few extra curricular activities you can get involved within while going through the apprenticeship. for example, you can take part in outward bound which is a great team building exercise in the lake district. you can also be involved in helping out on open days.

  • Yes

  • I would recommend BAE systems to a friend looking for an engineering future because you a working within a great company that has a great support scheme and offers an exciting future. As well as this, if you have just left school there are great apprenticeships which allow you to earn money while u learn.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • While applying for a job or apprenticeship at BAE systems, it can be a lengthy process while you wait for security clearance. The application is worth it once you get the job as you are involved within a large company that gives you a vast range of opportunity's as you progress.
