  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a tax consultant within GES Incentives & Reward, so my daily role varies depending on which projects I am involved in. Generally my duties include client and project management: communicating with clients and colleagues through emails and phonecalls, drafting engagement letters and project documents, maintaining our project codes and preparing billing instructions. Currently my main project is a global incentives automation tool implementation, so my day is mainly spent preparing and reviewing global equity calculations, analysing country and client specific tax positions, and drafting the required programme adjustments for the technology tool.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Having already worked in the industry for a couple of years, I joined Deloitte fairly confident in my organisational skills and comfortable with working under pressure in an office environment. These skills have been developed during my time here, and certainly my communication skills have been greatly improved. My technical knowledge has grown considerably through Deloitte's internal training and through the amazing variety of work I have been able to be involved in.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the work that I am able to be involved in, I think there is a great deal of opportunity provided here and there is such a broad scope that I am constantly challenged and encouraged to explore the business. My team are amazing and I love the culture that we have in our department, everyone is so supportive and dedicated to helping you learn, not just as a new joiner but even now 2+ years after starting. The only negative I have is in reference to the apprenticeship provider, BPP, who have been ridiculously disorganised and uncooperative since the start.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • When I joined my programme, the course provider had not yet worked out the structure of the course or the end date or any of the important details. Communication has been appalling throughout, and the organisation is awful. I was the first Brightstart in my office so no-one in my team knew what the apprenticeship was or how it was designed to work, which did in the end work out in my favour as I was treated the same as a graduate and given the same work as them (although this isn't how it is supposed to work).

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer and my team (especially my people leader and my coach within GES R&I) have been great throughout - if I need any support I know that anyone in my team will help me, whether this is help with technical learning, coaching in soft skills or general career advice. Having difficulties with my mental health this year, I can say with certainty that Deloitte are an incredibly supportive employer and helped me to access the help that I needed, encouraged me to take my time to recover, and put everything in place to help me to return to work in the healthiest way possible.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Absolute minimal. The situation has improved gradually over the last two and a half years but initially we were completely lost, neither myself or my fellow apprentices or our coaches received proper instruction for anything from BPP, queries were straight up ignored and communication was appalling. The study materials supplied were actually provided by Tolleys, and even then BPP managed to mess up providing us with these. Any problems raised were treated with frustration and annoyance, no support was given unless we pushed and pushed.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The work I do daily revolves around a fairly niche part of tax - shareplans and employment taxes - and so I found the ATT qualification really valuable for giving me a broader understanding of the tax industry. Especially the papers on business tax and accounting as these concepts come up in relation to the work I do and it has been a massive help to have an understanding of what the terms mean and how the company is affected by corporation taxes etc

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • we have sports teams and sports trips abroad (football in prague every year), charity groups and a lot of charity events, theres a gym within the building so there are exercise classes and yoga sessions run regularly at lunches or after work. we also have partner drinks every other month, regular events set up by our social committee (legoland family day, jan 31st party, summer ball, christmas parties) and opportunities to volunteer in the local community

  • 9a. Would you recommend Deloitte to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I've never worked for a Firm with such a dedicated focus on individual personal & professional development, I'm given so much support by my team and I feel like I matter as an individual within the company. We have a very healthy work/life balance and throughout my recent health struggles Deloitte have been incredibly understanding, supportive and respectful, and have given me everything I need to put a plan in place to get me back to work in the way that is best for me.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Deloitte?
  • Induction is very immersive - for tax roles you will start your Deloitte experience with a three week academy with all the other tax joiners, which is a combination of networking, company culture onboarding, teambuilding and soft skills training, and an introduction to technical. I found the application process very straightforward and was provided with a lot more information from Deloitte than I did from other apprenticeship schemes, my assessment centre was very well structured and friendly, and my partner interview was really relaxed and welcoming.
