My role as an aircraft engineer with GE Wales is to overhaul aircraft engines for customers such as Easy Jet Ryan air and many other providers. We as engineers work to/follow a maintenance manual that is written by the engine manufacturers to ensure that we are working to the correct standard and achieve a serviceable product.
I have learned many skills whilst taking part in the apprenticeship and on the job itself. I have learned and furthered my ability to work as a team with a wide variety or personalities and experience. I have also learned some communication skills such as going out to schools and events talking about my job.
I really enjoyed my time as an apprentice because it gave me the opportunity to meet new people who are like minded. It also gave me the option to earn money whilst i learnt on the job, this seemed a far better option for me compared to a university degree.
the apprenticeship program here at GE Wales is an excellent program. It's run over 3 years and is affiliated with the local college which is just down the road so it'd convenient. The course teaches you a multitude of skills, both academical and mechanical such as how to operate a machine e.g a lathe or a miller.
We receive a lot of support from out employer and the college itself. We had monthly reviews to ensure that we were working towards our goals. The training staff were always available to talk and give advice regarding the apprenticeship and especially with the NVQ that you undertake in year 2 and 3
We received quite a bit of support from the training provider in the form of monthly reviews. we would have goals and targets set each month then it would be out job to get them done over the space of the month as we moved around the factory, experiencing different sections
I feel that by doing the apprenticeship that i chose to do was the ideal way of learning on the job. the first year was all about the theory side of the job tied in with some practical work in the workshop. The skills that i learned in the apprenticeship are very transferable and were ideal for the job i have to do.
There are many extra curricular activities to get involved in as a part of GE. There is a golf society that i am a member of and this gives me the opportunity to meet different people from across the factory. There's also things such as a choir, football and rugby team and many others
Yes
Ge is a fantastic company to work for and the training they provide is second to none. The skills and qualifications that you gain whilst taking part in the apprenticeship are directly linked to the actual job you'll be doing. It's also a great way of getting to know different people and personalities and learning how to work with a variety of people in various situations
If possible, seek work experience to gain an insight on the company as the application process is very popular and any extra knowledge and information that you'll learn whilst being here will play in your favour as you go through the process. It would also benefit you to look into the history of the company and come to understand how a gas turbine engine works
