  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I’m an apprentice for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in Derby. My day-to-day work involves shadowing my mentor complete different jobs in the workshop, including engine rebuilds for example. I also do my own jobs which include servicing a vehicle for example. I also make sure the workshop is clean and tidy and safe to work in for my other colleagues.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many skills since starting my apprenticeship, which are proving very valuable to me for doing my job to the best standard. My mentor and other work colleagues have taught and are teaching me things constantly whilst I’m in the workshop. This has allowed me to be trusted with my own jobs already which gives me a great feeling of gaining independence whilst working on vehicles.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive lots of support from my employer. All of my colleagues including my mentor and manager are always very willing to help me if I’m ever unsure of what to do, whether in a job or any other situation. This support from my colleagues makes my learning experience much better and means I can complete jobs correctly and efficiently a lot of the time.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • When I go to the Volkswagen centre in Milton Keynes I receive an endless amount of advice and knowledge on how to be successful from my apprenticeship. The tips I receive from my training provider also helps me be a good member of the team back at the workshop, which is something I try really hard to be.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification set by my training provider involves many different tasks to complete within the workshop. This means my qualification allows me to work with many different aspects of my role meaning I will eventually become very competent in many jobs within the workshop. This is good for my confidence within the workshop.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • When I go to the Volkswagen van centre in Milton Keynes for the week as college, they organise a trip out every Wednesday evening after your day at the centre. So far I’ve done activities including airsofting. Other activities include go-karting or rock-climbing. These are really good and help with your confidence as you are meeting other apprentices from all over the country and making really good friends.
