  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role changes every year depending on both my preference and business needs. My first role was in the training department often dealing with the other apprentices onsite, but also preparing training rooms and helping schedule events both on and offsite. My second role is in the materials department organising and preparing spread sheet data, I also work with shop floor data and with engine parts.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • This being my first job has enhanced characteristics which are expected in a work environment. These would include extraversion, communication, evaluation and time awareness skills. These skills often form from working with others however motivation can also be considered improved over the period of my apprenticeship. Other skills would include the use of a computer in email, onsite software and especially excel as these are used daily and thus repetition causes improvement.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I find that the programme will have ups and downs, this however would be comparable to any other type of work. The ups would be the structure, opportunities and the work these things can help set out the day and make it easy to be satisfied when work is complete. The downs would refer to when work is either lacking or tedious this may occur rarely but can be boring. Overall, yes I enjoy my apprenticeship.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Although there are many apprenticeship forms onsite the business admin apprenticeship role is pretty easy to understand. Each year you will be assigned an office and work with the team there, this will mean following the business day as assigned by your managers which can be quite rigid. It is also expected that you complete a level 2 and 3 NVQ, this is helped by a weekly visit from the college and by the apprentice hand who has lots of experience in this field. Well organised and easy to understand.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There is always available support from the apprentice team, HR, managers and other colleagues. In regards to completing the NVQ support comes from college staff and from the apprentice team would can aid with questions on topic areas. The team is very open and can also help when or if you plan to move to another stage of the NVQ or when applying for jobs.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • As provided in the previous answers the support provided is extremely helpful as every week you have the opportunity to meet with the NVQ assessor and can ask the apprentice hand any time for help. There is a dedicated time period each week to complete the NVQ which is more than enough time in which to complete it.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Often the NVQ can feel like an additional tasks on which little importance holds. The need for the qualification is to become adept on paper at admin roles in the company but the experience of the work is much more impactful. Overall, the qualification comes second to the work and doesn't have an impact on performance in the roles.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • The site itself has a sports team and available social activities, the apprenticeship does contain some social activities set up by apprentices, however the apprentices are not exempt from an activity onsite and thus have many opportunities. The apprenticeship does run networking events where the apprentices will visit schools and other areas of interest to promote the business, these occur about 3 times a month and need to be signed up for but and can be good.

  • 9a. Would you recommend GE Aerospace to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • There are not many opportunities which are able to set you up for life if necessary with availability all around the world, the apprenticeship is quite highly paid for its type and gives three years of relevant industry experience to its participants. The apprentice aids are also very helpful and can make the time you are there easier.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to GE Aerospace?
  • I advise that you get into the work experience programme and try some time onsite, this will put you higher up the list. Otherwise, focus on STEM subjects as there are preliminary tests to entry and prepare for the interview should you get to that stage. If you know someone onsite they will be able to ask for advice directly from the apprentice hand and can help you prepare for the interview.
