  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a first year craft apprentice at BAE Systems. For my role I was given many options but I choose to be a machinist. My day to day basis is never the same as you never know what challenges await when on the conventional machines. I still have the second half of my first year to complete and I can't wait to get stuck in

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I definitely have developed my skills in being able to work and communicate within a team. Outward bound is great example of when BAE Systems pushes out the boat as Outward bound is a week away in the lake district filled with loads of team building exercise to really show you how important team work is within a business. Since starting the apprenticeship I have learnt how to use a centre lathe and a conventional milling machine.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the programme provided to me by BAE Systems. Coming straight from high school and going into an engineering environment is feels quite strange but I am so glad I chose to do the apprenticeship. All the tutors are very supportive and are always happy to help when needed.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme I am doing is organised well. After selecting what role you would like to specialise in you are given a programme for the rest of the first year on what you are going to be doing and when. When in induction the whole apprenticeship is explained to you and everything you will be doing is organised so that it can be easily interpreted.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive lots of support from my employer. If there is anything that will help me in the apprenticeship my employer will try there best to get it for me. they want me to have the best experience I can so that when I am sent out into the business I feel fully prepared.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive lots of support from my training provider towards my qualifications. all the work I do on the shop floor contributes to my qualification. If I am ever struggling when working towards my qualification my training provider will give lots of help to get me back on track so that I understand what is required.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that my qualification will help me perform better in my role. As I chose to be a machinist one of my qualifications I am working towards is specialised for a machinist. I believe will help me perform my role to best I can as will let me develop my knowledge

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there is. I have had a week away when I went to Outward bound with BAE Systems where I developed my communication and teamwork skills. I went to UK Skills Live 2018. I was given a presentation about ejector seats. I went to an engineering expo on site. There are apprentice football matches. And there are many more to get involved in.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • BAE Systems have given so many opportunities already. I am only 16 and work with an amazing team of colleagues. I felt welcomed into the world of work and that I have the rest of my life to see what challenges await and I would want everyone to get the experience I have had.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Don't that if you don't get the best grades you have no chance of getting the apprenticeship ! For my apprenticeship you only need a minimum of five grade 5's at GCSE level. I would recommend that you start your application as soon as the application window opens so that you have time to go over it and improve it.
