  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Everyday I work alongside engineers and people within the business who are experts in their field. I work in different areas throughout the business as part of my apprenticeship to gain a better understanding of the business and learn the skills I will need when I finish my apprenticeship and start my career.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have built upon existing skills that I had when I started my apprenticeship but I have also developed skills that are more specific to the work done by the business. I have also developed my personal skills including team working and communication which will be a benefit to me when it comes to progressing in my career.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy coming to work every day and getting involved in the different projects that I do as part of my placement. Even if I do not enjoy a certain placement, due to the way the apprenticeship is completed I will move onto another placement every four months which allows me to see a lot of different areas within the business.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is structured so that every apprentice experiences a number of different placements within the business. This allows every apprentice to try different areas of the business and different potential career paths which keeps the apprenticeship interesting and engaging. The apprenticeship is structured well and support is available for all apprentices if they want to focus on a certain career path.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer is always available for support and will push every apprentice to pursue further education and gain experiences when they become available. My employer has put in place points of contacts that are always available when support is needed. The business will also offer support if any is needed.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • When working towards the qualifications gained in the apprenticeship support is continually offered and there is always the opportunity to sit down with an assessor for help or guidance. The qualifications that are worked towards through out the apprenticeship are clearly explained from day one and support is always available.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel like the qualifications gained in the apprenticeship are very closely associated with the work completed within the business. I often find that the work that I have completed in my further education is very applicable in the work that I complete within my placements and I can often see the links between the work I do in F.E with the work I complete in placement.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are no explicit extra curricular activities organised by the company but it is often the case that the apprentices will organise there own events or groups so there is always something to do. When professional networking events are organised everyone from the business can apply to attend which includes apprentices.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The apprenticeship offers anyone aged 16 and over the opportunity to get into engineering without completing the traditional route of getting a degree and putting yourself in a lot of debt. The company offers support and guidance to all apprentices and gives people the potential to get into a rewarding career.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • I would advise to research into the company and the products that we produce to see if this type of engineering would interest you. A career in engineering can be very rewarding but there are so many different engineering careers now, make sure that aerospace engineering is the area that you want to get into.
