  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • completing maintenance on a variety of systems depending on section of the airport in which you are currently stationed. planned maintenance must be carried out to a set schedule whilst faults come in throughout the day that must also be dealt with accordingly. all of this is completed under the supervision of a qualified technician to ensure correct methods and training is used

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • i learnt many skills whilst on the scheme, at the start i did not know much about the engineering world however through the scheme i have developed skills and knowledge in mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, electronic engineering and knowledge of plumbing and water systems. i have also learnt more about the workings of a large scale airport including day to day running activities and large scale projects.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • i loved every second of the four year scheme at Heathrow, i gained many new friends through the scheme (both from Heathrow and other companies through college). i enjoyed working in different sections every month to ensure i got a varied view of working at Heathrow before deciding on a final section where i would like to work once qualified.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • the scheme is very well organised with the first year of the scheme being spent at college learning the basics of the various fields of engineering to ensure that everyone starts on site at the same level. once on site you conduct 4 month rotations around the various engineering sections of the airport gaining experience and knowledge to help you complete your portfolio

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • i received a large amount of support from my employer, my managers were very approachable with any problems i faced during the 4 years and were very open about what was going on within the company and the various sections. monthly meeting were also conducted which upper management to ensure that the apprentices could voice opinions about life at the airport. the entire airport is incredibly supportive of the engineering scheme, every technician has something to teach you and each are more than welcoming of learning and questions.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • whilst completing my qualifications at college i received great help from many of the staff and lecturers, each were more than happy to give me their time to talk through any issues i had with assignments or work and ensured that i understood each topic before moving on. each lecturer drove the apprentices to receive the best results they could.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • when i started the scheme i knew very little about engineering and through the training provider i learnt more about the different types of engineers and gained a base knowledge which allowed me to comprehend and conduct work on-site. my training provider also allowed me to conducted higher qualifications which gave me an insight into other aspects of my role such as project management

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • there are many events held throughout the year at Heathrow with the aim to bring colleagues closer together or to give family members an insight to life at the airport. these activities range from family fun days to relay races down the runway. there are also various charity events and team building exercises which are conducted throughout the year.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • i loved every second of my course and the skills my work and training provider have given me have ensured that i can conduct my job role in and safe and competent manner. every day at Heathrow is different with different faults and tasks everyday however with the skills developed over the scheme every fault can be solved ensuring that work is always interesting and never frustrating


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Heathrow Academy?
  • always ensure that you have a drive and passion for the role you are applying for. always show interest in any tasks given to you and always ensure that you listen and take aboard others opinions during group tasks. always show up to interviews dressed in a professional manner and if a project is needed ensure that you can answer questions about the project you have brought
