  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am in the cloud team at Unilever. My job involves deploying cloud servers that can be used by the whole company. I also need to understand security measures so that our networks that are set up are secure over the internet. To ensure a efficient network is also a priority.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The work side of my apprenticeship has been very enjoyable. There are lots of new people and all of them are accepting and kind. The company as a whole are all welcoming and they make my job a lot more enjoyable. The work I do is also engaging and interesting.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • From an employer side the programme is very organised with each apprentice having their designated manager to report to. The training side is also organised with the degree being available online and well structured. I always know who and where to report my issues to and I'm never worried about a thing.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My manager has been the most support to me from day one, answering all questions I present. All in the company are also welcoming to my queries. The other apprentices are also there going through the same process and provide a great peer group to talk to and relate to.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The Open University provides tutors for each module you take. You are then able to email or even call these tutors whenever you need help or have questions. They usually get back within the same day with useful feedback. However, the OU is based on if you have enough self drive to succeed as it is a very self driven course.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • In many ways the modules I'm taking are relevant. At the moment I'm learning about the basics of networking which directly links to my work. However, there is my other module that is about self-development and self-learning which I'm sure is important but I'm currently finding it less interesting.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is a strong community at my work place. They often hold events on celebrations. Most recently was the Christmas party last month, that was fun. There are also opportunities at lunch hours to take part in yoga along with other activities to have a rest from your work day.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • They are an accommodating business with a wide range of opportunities. They are a huge company so roles are available in factory work, IT work, marketing work and admin work. They are respected on a global scale. Few other businesses can offer the wide range of roles that Unilever can.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
  • Focus on why you want to apply to Unilever specifically. Focus on the scale of operations and how much you want to be involved in something bigger such as this global company. You might also want to focus on the product side get to know which products are made by Unilever and have an understanding of what the company truly does.
