  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day to day basis I have to analyse all the costs that the team spend and look at how this can be optimised. I look at ways of saving money. For example, looking at what type of software or applications we use and look if we can reserve them so we pay for a specific amount of time to save money in the long term. My role is all about cost optimisation.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Both new skills have been learnt as existing skills have been developed. A lot of my technical skills have been improved and I am much more aware of the technical world and applications which are used in day to day life. Existing skills have developed, I am a lot more confident now and my time management has improved.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am very impressed with how the programme matches the job description. It is exactly how I imagined it to be and it is a very interesting area to work in. The university work links in with the work I do in my day to day role so it helps me put my knowledge into practice.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is very organised. In terms of my learning it is split up weekly so I know what I am supposed to be doing and can see the deadlines. My work also matches this as it is altered to what I am doing at university. There is always something to do and it is very well structured.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I am in a team where lots of support is given and anyone is willing to help. I have weekly meetings with my line manager who tells me how I could improve and tells me what I am doing well. If there was an issue I would ask my team and they would support me the best they can.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • There are tutorials along the way with my degree to help me prepare for my assignments. When an assignment is marked it is given back with lots of comments on with where I did well and where I went wrong. If I have a question I phone my tutor and he answers any issues I have.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think it really helps as I learn the basics and then put it into practice. My work role is altered to what I am doing in my university work so I learn how it is done and then do the work. If I don't understand after that, I will go back and look over it again.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are a range of different activities to get involved in. Every time there is a big event like Halloween, Lord levers birthday etc. events are held to celebrate. You can get involved in yoga and knitting club. There are many opportunities to go to social events like the Christmas party.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a great place to work with a lot of support. There are a lot of people here so it is a good chance to network with a range of people. You don't just make the tea as an apprentice, you actually do work that will impact the business and make a difference.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
  • The advice I would give is to give examples of where you have done things, don't just be generic. Express interest in the area you are applying within and be confident and be yourself. Don't doubt yourself because we all have different skills that could help someone in one way or another.
