ICA apprentice Review

Depending on the day, I can be given different tasks to do. some of these tasks involve: -Preventative maintenance activities (calibrating and servicing equipment) -Breakdown (a site or piece of equipment has failed and I must fix it) -Fault finding (there could be a problem on site and I have to fault find to work out the problem and fix it) -Planned work (a job that has been planned in previously like installing a new piece of equipment) and much much more!

I have learnt many new skills in my apprentice role to date. I have learnt all about the world of water and the process of treating the water. This can involve many different processes and many problems can occur on the way. I have also learnt about what different techniques you can use to treat the water (filters, gas etc). I have also learnt about PLC's, what they are, what they do and how to program them. along with the practical side of things I have also learnt theory based knowledge at college in the first year of my apprenticeship. I still have much more to learn!

I enjoy what I do a great deal. I always love coming into work and love learning new things about this industry. I like learning about new process too and suggesting ideas on how to improve them even more. I enjoy working within a team and I look forward to the future here for me at Severn Trent

The program is structured in a way that suits everyone. the first year we studied at college to get out BTEC qualification and to get to know out fellow colleagues at Severn Trent. The next year we did day release at college and started doing out NVQ and trailblazer qualifications while also finishing off out BTEC. This gave us a chance to learn on site and at college too.

The support here at Severn Trent is great. My manager is always supportive of what I do and is always there to help me through any problems I have. there are plenty of other people at Severn Trent who support me when needed and help me to learn everything I need to know.

The training provided is EEF technology training centre. Most of the trainers were very helpful and gave good constructive feedback. If I was stuck with my work they were always happy to help me and happy to go over whatever I needed to. This is the same for all my colleagues too.

There are three qualifications that I will get out of this apprenticeship: -BTEC level 3 -NVQ level 3 -Trailblazer These are work based qualifications and most relate to the job I do. The BTEC is the qualification that is the most 'college based' and although its all engineering only about 50% is useful for my job. This is a general qualification for an engineering BTEC so is a variety of topics to ensure every form of engineering is covered.

There is activities provided for people who want to get involved and lots of opportunities to work with charities too. Severn Trent often encourages people to do challenged like step challenge and bike challenge. There are often football events organised for people around the business to get involved in doing.

Severn Trent is a company that makes me feel proud to work for. I enjoy coming to work which is something I'd never thought I would say. each day I learn new things and I have a lot of support from my manager and colleagues when ever I need it. I would recommend this apprenticeship to anyone who asks as it is great for development (earn while you learn), surrounded by friendly people always willing to help and is a great step to building up my career.

Just go for it! Its always hard moving to a new place of work especially straight out of school or college but the people who work at Severn Trent always make you feel welcome. It is a great step for your career, and there are plenty of different job opportunities within Severn Trent so if you don't like the job you first move into then there is many different roles you could move into.
