  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • For my apprenticeship I sat within the HR Support Services team. Daily tasks included all aspects of an employees lifecycle for example sending out offers, contracts or leavers letters. We would be dealing with a wide range of customers inside and outside of the organisation. During this time I became responsible for picking up the internal travel pass scheme and projects such as creating process documentation and managing workloads for the team.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During my Apprenticeship I learnt a variety of new skills. The constant customer interaction vastly improved my telephone, email and face to face skills. Dealing with sometimes challenging situations helped me become a lot more confident by the end of the apprenticeship not just in work but outside of work as well. I also learnt about HR and the vital role it plays within organisations.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoyed my apprenticeship at Wesleyan, not only did it help me progress my career but I made life long friends with it. The organisation has a caring attitude at its core, something that's rare in the modern workplace. Myself and the other apprentices around the business were brought together to work on other projects as well. This helped build strong relationships around the business with a strong.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The apprenticeship was well organised by both Wesleyan and Birmingham Metropolitan. I was able to balance both the day to day BAU and the work on the qualification. There was the opportunity to move around the business for apprentices, sadly I missed out on this due to the high workloads of my team. However I know that since I was on the apprenticeship its been vastly improved for a more varied experience.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As mentioned earlier Wesleyan has a caring attitude as a business. I was always fully supported by my manager, Apprenticeship mentor, and my team. If I was ever struggling with the workload, I felt fully supported in raising this and getting the help I needed. Internal courses were offered for various skills such as Right for Time and Planning and Prioritising. Having other apprentices also allowed for a strong support network on top of this.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I received a lot of support from the training provider whilst on my apprenticeship. Regular catch-up and meetings between myself and the tutor helped me understand what was needed for the course. They worked within my schedule, allowing me to focus on BAU when needed. The feedback provided from them was very useful and helped me not only with the course but in work a well.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification really helped me understand the basics of the role I was in. Although it wasn't specifically tailored to the HR Administrator role, it still provided valuable insight into administration. It helped improve my communication skills, learn about the organisation and perform basic admin tasks. As someone who cam straight from sixth form this insight was invaluable in helping me navigate the workplace.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There's always events and groups to get involved in at Wesleyan. One of the best things about it is its city centre location, there is so much to do in the surrounding area. The society has set up I&D groups such as the gender network and LGBT and allies. There also regular sports events and volunteering opportunities.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Wesleyan to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Wesleyan is a caring company and a great place to start your career. Since finishing the apprenticeship I have been supported in moving forward with my career path within the company. Its central office is in a fantastic location, and the staff here care about supporting and nurturing talent. I've learnt so much in a short amount of time, cant recommend it enough.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Wesleyan?
  • On my Apprenticeship there were people from all backgrounds joining, some had been to Uni, some had worked at other places and then lots like myself that joined straight from education. Be proud of what you have achieved so far and show that you are willing to learn. Most importantly be yourself!
