  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as an actuarial apprentice consists of me working in the financial planning and analysis team. Within this team I work on a range of different things including monthly income, sales reporting, unit pricing, processing invoices and many other tasks. I use many different programs some of these being Excel, Prophet Professional, RiskAgility etc.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Being an actuarial apprentice has lead to me developing my analytical skills heavily as I am always working with a lot of data which I need to draw conclusions and results from. Making sure to have great attention to detail is something that is paramount in the role as when you are running a lot of models in prophet or working with huge datasets it is vital that you are aware of every change or update you have made.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I've been in the role 4 months so far and most days there is something new I learn so I enjoy coming to work everyday. As I am an apprentice I get a lot of different training courses which I am put on to further develop myself. I also feel that going forward as I gain a deeper understanding from the work I am doing I will be able to take even more pleasure from the work that I do.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I believe that the programme is very well structured as we are given regular catch ups with our line managers to plan out a path of where we are going with the programme. We are also given a timetable with all of the courses and opportunities that we can take throughout the time spent on the programme.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support is great as I feel the employer understands that the more they invest in us the more reward they gain in the future. This can include paying for our expenses to go on courses outside of the company and also putting us on group courses where we can develop our skills. We also get support through our managers and every apprentice gets a mentor who can give us valuable insight into our job role and study etc.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider is very good as we all receive a study booklet and then a log in to an online learning environment where we have videos and monthly tests which we have to take to show we are keeping to our study targets. We also get an online tutorial where we get lectured on our study material and gives us a chance to ask questions. We also get an e-book which we can download to a device so we can study on the go. There's also an online forum where any questions we want to ask about topics we may be struggling with are answered.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that it helps me a great amount as the more I learn the more I can apply what I learn to the role. Also the fact that I have to do write ups for my apprenticeship on different things I do so for example what tools I use to manage my time helps me to gain even more of an understanding on the work that I have carried out.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is workplace which is Facebook for work which gives people a chance to socialise and do things outside of work together. Teams also regularly go out together for meals and drinks so that people can get to know each other outside of a professional setting. I am also encouraged to go on many networking events.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • There is a great work life balance within the company and they really try to develop their apprentices. There are also many opportunities within the company to progress your career. I would recommend it as every day I look forward to coming to work due to the fact that all the people within the company are sociable and hard working.
