  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Currently, I am in the Stage 1 Hull & Outfit team. I am currently completing cabin mock-ups. This involves completing 3 separate cabins to full completion so that each cabins replicate 'as seen on ship'. This allows Naval officers to understand the living conditions and compartment layout of each cabin before they are on ship. It involves a lot of discussion with Naval authority, stakeholders and operations.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I feel my communication skills have developed a lot throughout completing this job. I am also completing another job which involves gathering information for webbing straps. I need to call, email and schedule meetings to find information about the straps so I can feed the info back to the supporting engineer for the task.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme and the placements. I feel there is a lot of opportunities within and outside the work place to get involved. I feel the different array of placements allows me to develop my skills and allows me to learn skills I can use throughout my engineering career

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I feel the placement plan is well structured once you settle. I felt at the start of the programme the first few weeks were unorganised and a lot of time was spent gaining IT and ensuring you were in the correct placement etc. I feel this could have been complete prior to apprentices arriving in the business and to ensure each apprentice was fully equipped with the correct It and equipment.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my employer. I always feel I have someone to turn to if something goes wrong, this could be my training officer or placement manager. This helps me get the a lot out of the placement I am completing as I know if a problem occurs it can be easily resolved.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I feel the training we receive for qualifications is good. I feel some lectures within the college are a lot better at helping and assisting you than others. Different learning styles suit students more and help you develop and learn more. Overall, I feel pleased with the training I receive for the qualifications I have to gain.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel most of the courses I have completed within college have helped me throughout my current job role. I feel some subjects could be replaced with others which would be more beneficial (e.g. bench fitting, machining). My job role involves more Computer Aided Design support so completing these hand on tasks I feel could be replaced with a more beneficial subject.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, this idea has been developed massively in the last few months. The apprentice council have created social events which allows apprentices from all trades and year groups to meet up and get to know one another. A social event hasn't been organised yet but I am sure it will be beneficial for the company once it is complete.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Each placement allows you to develop knew skills and knowledge which can be used for the rest of your career. Speaking with many different engineers has helped my confidence massively and helps me understand working relationships as well as the job itself. it is a very rewarding job if you are keen and enthusiastic

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • I would ensure you are interested in engineering subjects in school, this includes graphic communications, physics and maths. You should just be yourself when completing the online application and at the interview and show how interested you are in the work of BAE Systems. Be confident and enthusiastic to learn.
