Network technician apprentice Review

My job is to go around Leicester checking and maintaining the sewer network. This can involve things such as NRV (non return valves) and CSO or combined sewer operator. This job involves quite a lot of customer work as some of the man holes needed to be inspected are in peoples gardens.

I have developed several skills whilst working at Severn Trent. One of the main ones is working effectively in a team. In the induction weeks, they were mainly focused around teamwork and now that I have joined my full time role I can see why this was implemented in the two starter weeks.

I really do enjoy my programme that I am on. I say this mainly due to me being a hands on person and because this apprenticeship has a reduced time at college and a lot more time out doing my actual role this allows me to embrace the hands on work for what it is and become a more valued member of the team

My programme is fairly well organised. There are a couple of hiccups in relation between my college and manager as it hasn’t really been communicated until very late when I am at college or at site. This could be improved by sorting this out at a much earlier date.

With Severn Trent, I receive a lot of support. I say this for a couple of reasons. The first reason being that they provide you with whatever you need, whether this be PPE or a place to stay whilst going to the hotel. The other reason is that they pay 45p per business mile that you do which means that i am not using too much money driving around everywhere

When I am doing my qualifications, Severn Trent are there to ensure that if I have any questions or queries, they are there to help answer any of this. Whilst studying at the EEF I struggled with one of the bio resource parts. So when I went back to site, my manager helped organise a week visit at a bio resource site so I could see how it operated

Due to me not having to be at college a lot, having the qualifications doesn’t really affect me. Another reason that it doesn’t really affect me is that I already have a level three qualification in engineering as I completed this at my previous sixth form that I attended.

I am not very sure if there are any extra curricular activities available to me outside of working hours. However I am aware of some charity opportunities that are available. One of these was a pudsey evening in which Severn Trent hosted a call centre and had volunteers answering calls.

Overall Severn Trent is a fantastic place to work and I believe that they care very much about each and every one of their employees. I also think that they do a vital job in the community and I enjoy the idea of helping other people around me. Since my time at Severn Trent I have loved it and it has made me a better person

One of the main tips that I would give to people joining Severn Trent is apply as soon as possible and make sure you are as prepared as possible as you do not want to miss the opportunity to do something with your career and help as many people as possible
