  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • When fully trained I will be solely responsible for operating and maintaining the bioresorces department at any given site within my area. This basically means I make sure the a site is producing green energy which will be used to sell back to grid whilst also powering the site itself to allow us to be as self sufficient as possible.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • When joining Severn Trent you will learn a vast variety of skills that can be used to apply at work for your specific role and also skills that can be applied in everyday life. You will be amazed at just how much you learn in such a short amount of time when getting involved in an apprenticeship with ST.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Personally I have loved this apprenticeship program from the moment I started. It has provided me with a great quality of life with a vast amount of variety which helps keep work/life interesting and with there being so much going on within ST I can’t see that variety slowing down anytime soon. Honestly couldn’t imagine another apprenticeship scheme achieving such a high standard of enjoyment.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The apprenticeship program has been well structured since I started (apart from a few minor hiccups) which has managed to keep me engaged, entertained and motivated to continue with ST. For example there has been so much going on, such as team building outings at an activity centre, the opportunity to experience many different aspects of the company outside of my normal role and also a well paced college schedule.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The amount of available support for apprentices is endless. If you need help of any kind there is always someone there to lend some form of support. Wether it’s further assistance you require for the academic side of the apprenticeship or maybe someone to talk to about personal issues there will always be someone to help.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Again there is every bit of help/support you would ever need. Specifically with qualifications though I have needed extra help with my maths which was proving itself to be an issue and as a result I voiced my concerns and was placed on a extra maths course which has helped push me in the desired direction.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • As of yet I haven’t really studied much that has been relevant to my role however the most relevant qualification is still yet to come. I have had the one week of relevant academic training which has indeed helped a little but i feel there is still yet a lot to learn which will have a positive impact on my actual role

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • As far as extra-curriculum activities are concerned there is a fair amount to get involved in such as volunteering days at careers fairs, networking events, charity events, opportunities to help your community and as mentioned before team building outings. There is also a lot that can be organised with the other apprentices which managers are happy to consider.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Severn Trent to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I’d recommend ST to anyone looking for an exciting change which will set you up for life with a career that is definitely up there with some of the best opportunities currently available. After joining ST I personally see myself being with them for the rest of my working life.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Severn Trent?
  • When applying for ST it’s always best to do as much research about the company as possible. Passion and a friendly personality are essential, more so than your academic experience. Learning the company values before applying is also recommended. Doing all you can to show willing to go the extra mile will also go a long way. Good luck to anyone thinking of joining.
