  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Continuing to focus on the strategic growth of existing Priority accounts and the acquiring of new business from both Corporate sector, and non-profit organisations. We are also responsible for managing and driving the account management team to achieve and exceed set targets and KPIs, whilst monitoring account performance. On top of this, the role involved creating and working to business growth plans in line with the latest industry news. We also liaise with customers frequently, to ensure satisfaction and trust.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my communication skills since working at Softcat, after speaking frequently with customers, vendors and colleagues. My business acumen has improved as well, working within a company the size of Softcat, and through constant emails being sent to people. I would say that I am also much more confident.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Overall I think the apprentice programme is by far one of the most organised, and best routes into a company like Softcat. It is evident that a lot of time, and money is spent investing in our development across the year to ensure we are in the best possible position going into our first year.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • As mentioned previously, this apprenticeship is one of the most organised I have come across and from speaking with my peers, they would also agree. The constant interaction with our training provider also helps us to understand the direction we are going in towards completing our qualification. This is a credit to Softcat.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We received lots of support from our employer, including Team Leaders, and the apprentice managers. Everyone seems to be on board with apprentices at Softcat and I have been impressed by the time and effort spent on training us, in a positive manner to help us further develop our role.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We met monthly with our tutor, who was also available to answer any questions we had about the coursework. However, the coursework was definitely my least favourite part of the Apprenticeship. Whilst I appreciate it is vital, as it will ultimately determine whether we get the job, I just feel that the training provider are slightly out of touch with the role, and the industry we are working in.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification is brilliant as it is recognised within the industry. The qualification helps us to understand both the technical and sales theory needed to excel in our roles as account managers working in IT. I definitely know more about the industry since doing this apprenticeship which is helpful for customers.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are a number of company events which Softcat run, and they are always great fun. We also offer a number of sports clubs including Football and Yogo on Friday, all of which are free to attend. The company is also keen on running a number of activities in the community.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Softcat is a fantastic place to work, and start your career if you are looking to work in the IT industry. It is a company which is growing faster than our competitors, in an industry that is constantly changing and exciting. They really do care about their employees as well.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Softcat?
  • Understand the business, through researching and viewing the company website. I would also suggest creating a good Linked In profile to help you boost your social selling profile, which helps to build trust with customers, but also gives recruiters an insight into you as a person and can differentiate you from others.
